Looking forward to my trip to Singapore. Leaving in a couple of days. I have lots of plans for sightseeing, trips etc. But wants some final thoughts on best places to eat. Will, of course, be going to the hawker stalls at various places. I also want to try the East Coast Seafood centre. Which is the best restaurant there. I love all types of seafood and would like to try "drunken prawns" which I have read about. Has anyone tried Doc Chengs lately ? I have heard it is very good. Finally I read on this forum about a champagne / seafood brunch, at the Ritz I think, what does this cost and are there other hotels that do this.

Have a wonderful time in Singapore, Fiona. Doc Cheng's is one of my favorites (indeed, I've had two Xmas Eve dinners there - what an experience!). I make sure to get to Doc Cheng's every trip. The food is wonderful.

I had written about a Chanpagne and seafood bruch at the Compass Rose, atop the tallest hotel in Singapore. It used to be the Westin Stamford, and is now owned by the Swisshotel chain. They have changed the menu and it's now a rather uninteresting Asian buffet, Too bad. Perhaps there is another place offering a Chanpagne and Seafood brunch.

Oh and another favorite for a real splurge - Les Amis Au Jardin, located in the botanical gardens. I always go for a luxurious lunch, as you get the benefit of the lovely scenery.

the restaurant i like at the east coast seafood centre is the long beach. i don't know if its the best, as i have not eaten at the others, but i like it. the chili crab is delicious. also, if you are there, go to the recently remodeled seafood hawker center next door, many shops with great food. i like the bar b que stingray. i think the ritz carlton has the sunday brunch you are inquiring about. there are posting here about the hotel and the brunch service. good eating!

Sorry to hear about the Compass Rose. One of my fav restaurants in Singapore. :(

I know what you mean, easy. The Compass Rose had been a routine stop on my Singapore trips for many years. The seafood buffet and the fois gras station were wonderful. Alas! all things change.

I'll be going back to Singapore next month and can't wait. I love the place. Definitely go to Indochine Restaurant. There are several locations. The one on Club Street is great and in a great area if you want to go to home interior design stores.Plus the Hindu Temple Sri Marm...(sp) is right around the corner if you want to visit it. Then there's the beautiful one located in the Asian Civilizations Museum also. And there's one two streets over from the Rendevous Hotel and one in Holland Village. Also, Thanying Thai restaurant is great. I've eaten at the Singaporean ones several times as well as the original one in Bangkok. There's one in Clarkes Quay and one in the Amara Hotel as soon as you step out of the MRT (subway) station right next to the hotel. I think it's called Tanjong Pagar MRT(sp?). Happy travels!

If there's one thing you don't have to worry about when you're in Singapore, its food - there's plenty of good food options everywhere.

When in Orchard Road, do check out Basement 2 of Takashimaya (Ngee Ann City). There are lots of small snack stalls and you can have a field day trying all the different things there. Snacks that are popular with the locals include Ya Kun Kaya Toast and Takopachi.

From now till the end of July, there's a Singapore Food Festival event in the carpark opposite Centerpoint Shopping Center in Orchard Road. In the 1970s, this area used to be filled with up to 80 hawkers selling food in push carts, but they were relocated elsewhere in 1978. In an attempt to recreate "Glutton's Square", 10 hawkers have been brought into the area and they are serving up Singaporean classics like chicken rice, char kway teow and barbeque seafood. Its an old-fashioned outdoor dining experience, so go on a non-rainy day. Daily, from 6pm to early morning.
