16-day Malaysia trip in October - input needed :)!

Hello fellow travelers!

This year we will be spending a little over 2 weeks in Malaysia and are still in the brainstorming phase of where to go and what to do.

Does anyone have some suggestions to guide us into the right direction?

We are planning on spending a couple of nights in KL, before heading to the country side by rental car to be able to go off the beaten track. We are hoping to do some hiking, seeing the Cameron highlands, possibly visiting the orangutan (Borneo?) and spending the last 4 days at a deserted beach doing absolutely nothing (besides some snorkeling ;) ).

Oh yeah, I should mention that our 1,5 year-old daughter is tagging along.

Any advise is very welcome! Thanks in advance!

Hi hecandel,

We are currently in Borneo at the moment.

For Oranguatns and beach head to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. Nice town for a couple of days . Great , cheap seafood. There are a few nice beaches around KK and that is where you will find some of the better hotels Shangri La etc. For really deserted beaches and reasonable snorkelling rent a car and drive to the "Tip of Borneo" ( near Kudat). Takes around 3 hours.

A nice side trip from KK is to Mount Kinabalu park. No need to climb the mountain as there are some great hikes around the base of the park lasting anywhere from 30 mins to 5 hours. Great scenery and easy access to the rainforest. Good simple accommodation outside the park gate or really overpriced rooms inside.

The beaches are fantastic and really are deserted. We were there for 5 days and for 3 of those we were the only people on the 2 km beach. Several other smaller and equally deserted beaches close by. The other two days were public holidays and even then there were only maybe a dozen people on the beach. Simple hotels but perfectly adequate, private facilities, air con etc.

For Orangutans you need to go to Sepilok/ Sandakan. It's a 45 min flight and very cheap on Air Asia. Two nights is enough. There are also lots of beach options around there too.

We may be heading up to the Cameron Highlands next week for few days so will try and report back. Driving in Malaysia is very easy.

What time of year are you planning on going? Weather patterns vary tremendously between the west and east coasts in Peninsula Malaysia so that may impact your planning.

Crellston has give you some good information. I'd recommend you pick up a guidebook and read about both Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak) - quite different places. You could spend two weeks in either - if you want to cover some of each, you 'll have to do more careful planning, so you won't rush through places.

For a good beach if you don't go to Borneo I recommend the Perhentians.

Great information- thank you so much!

We will be in Malaysia during the last 2 weeks of October, so I guess we should stick to the West coast? Weather permitting, we would love to visit Borneo as well.

Crellston, enjoy the rest of your trip! Looking forward hearing from you again!
