10th anniversary fine dining VEGETARIAN ...? (Bangkok)
 

Looking for a posh, delicious, exemplary dining experience to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary. No budget...but it needs to be vegetarian and preferably not a European cuisine.

Is anyone familiar with any of the better restaurants offering an exceptional dining experience? We are both allergic to seafood and fish (I know...poor us!) So they need to cook truly veg. I see lots of great food but we want the exceptional experience, service, atmosphere.

Allergic to fish? That will make it a bit difficult for traditional Thai or VN cuisine, as there is fish sauce in everything.

Gaggan is a good bet, you would just have to let him know in advance (like when you make your reservations) about the food restrictions.

I would say Gaggan but ring or email them first to see the options......

Most Thais love meat so not a lot of vego places. Maybe look at Indian restaurants. There is a few on google.

I believe our resident Bangkok expert is in Bhutan this weekend. I'm sure he will have other suggestions. I find it relatively easy to find vegetarian food in Bangkok - most nice restaurants are very willing to accommodate you.

Am sure Bob will chime in when he gets back from Bermuda, as will Hanuman when he gets back from Hua Hin.
How about one of the restaurants in the Mandarin Oriental? That's a great setting?
Hanuman also likes the Water Library check their menu out.

The great restaurants in the Oriental are either seafood, French or Chinese. Not what the OP is looking for. Across the river is the Oriental's Thai restaurant, which is a buffet - nothing the OP could eat given the fish allergy.

big buffets might be an answer: all the major hotels have them..

call rang mahal restaurant in the Rembrandt hotel... I'm sure they would prepare something nice for you.. ask for a window seat---fantastic..

Most oft he vegetarian restaurants that I know of are not "fine" dining. Gaggan is fine dining and does have a vegetarian menu but you should tell them ahead of time that you will only want strictly vegetarian food. I have take Fodorites there who are vegetarian and they enjoyed the food.

I'm sorry but being a non vegetarian I don't really look out for vegetarian food.

I do hope to hear from some of your expert folks when they get back. We travel widely...and veg food is easy to find. Even in Thailand in my experiences in the past. But as Hanuman says, the fine dining part is the trouble.

Ideally it would be a place which specializes in this, or at least offers it. I have had mixed results with have a special meal made for this kind of thing.....when it goes sour its bad.

I thought of the Mandarin Oriental as well but not a good fit. As for Gaggan, Indian doesn't use fish sauce so its possibly a good fit.

I also sent an inquiry to the Issaya Siamese Club.

Gaggan, the restaurant, is not Indian. Gaggan, the chef is. If you had to put a name on the cuisine, it would be molecular.

Rang Mahal is an Indian restaurant.

I just heard back from the Issaya Siamese Club and they sent along their AMAZING looking vegetarian menus, including set menus. Nice to know they cater to vegetarians so well.

Any thoughts on the place?

We had a Fodors GTG dinner at the Issaya a while ago. You, or the taxi, might find it hard to locate so I suggest that you write down their phone number for the taxi driver.

IMO comparing between the two places I would choose Gaggan and I have eaten at both places numerous times. If you do choose Gaggan, reserve a table in the "show dining room" and you will be able to look into the kitchen and observe the cooking.

I attended that GTG and the food was indeed good, but there is no comparison with Gaggan, which is in world by itself...

I consider Gaggan to be an international restaurant with Indian sub-titles or overtones.

we always have the tasting menu with additions, and I would suggest you do the same, but with a veggie base.

as an aside, they have very unusual drinks on offer as well.

also the house the restaurant is located in is a charming old white colonial building located at the end of a long narrow soi (driveway really) very near to the Marriott mayfair.

Have eaten at Gaggan a few times and it is simply fabulous......

Gaggan gets mixed reviews from 1 star to 5.

I know..that's why I came on this forum to get a few more ideas....but it does sound interesting ....
