1 day in Bangkok Itinerary for Honeymoon

Hi fellow travelers, I will have one full day in Bangkok. Any suggestions as to what I should do? My husband and I will be on our honeymoon.

I was thinking about doing a half day tour, then roaming around during the afternoon. For dinner I was hoping to have a nice dinner and then have drinks on a rooftop bar.

Recommendations as to what tour I should do? I would like to visit the temples.

Thank you in advance!

As you are on your honeymoon trip, so i would like to suggest dinner at Chao proya river dinner cruise and in the day visit two most significant temples in Bangkok: Wat Trimitr (Golden Buddha) and Wat Pho (Reclining Buddha Temple) and if time remains visit Gems Gallery too.
Enjoy your Honeymoon......

I fear that your first response is from an advertiser. The dinner cruises on the river have poor food, I don't recommend them. And while jewelry can be a great buy in Bangkok, Gem Gallery is well-known for being vastly overpriced. It's the kind of place a tuk-tuk driver will take you to (and will get a big commission on anything you buy).

The one stop on most people's itineraries is a stop at the Grand Palace/Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Wat Pho, the Reclining Buddha is in the next block at Wat Arun is just across the river (you take a tiny foot ferry). It is easy to visit all three temples in a long morning. Just get to the GP/EB as it opens at 8:30. If you have the time, a stop at Wat Tramit, located in Chinatown is also worthwhile. There are plenty of other temples well worth visiting, but you only have one day in Bangkok.

I do not recommend a tour, you can easily get to the major temples via water taxi. If you want/need commentary, you can hire an official guide as you enter the Grand Palace/Emerald Buddha complex for a few dollars.

What kind of food are you interested in? The place we love (which was selected as the best restaurant in Asia) is Gaggan. Gaggan appears in the last episode of the second season Chef's Table. It is hard to get reservations, but ask your concierge to get you a reserved table. The food is amazingly inventive molecular cuisine.

a visit to the grand palace is #1 first thing in AM... followed by a visit to reclining Buddha nearby. lunch at jim Thompson house and a tour of the house.
a visit across the river to wat arun and finally a tour by long tail boat of the klongs (canals) of thornburi.

I suggest hiring a driver to get you from one place to another in the most comfort... my favorite is tourswithtong---google her.

a dinner river cruise might be fun but the food is not that great I am told. I would prefer dinner at one of bkk's great restaurants followed by a roof top bar experience (sky bar or top of the banyon tree hotel).

choose what kind of food you might like and ask us for restaurant suggestions

Kathie, Thank you so much for the recommendations. I was considering either Gaggan or Bo.lan. Have heard great reviews about both. I wanted Thai food, but fine dining.

Rhkkmk, looking into tours with tong. If we end up visiting the temples on our own without a tour guide, is the process of getting a long tail boat to take us from one place to the other pretty simple?

We ate at Bo.lan when we were there in November. The food was good, but by no means amazing. Much better was Nahm, but some of the food was so hot as to be inedible (and I like hot food). If you ask, I'm sure the waitperson can guide you to less hot dishes.

You don't want or need a long tail to take you from place to place, just take the water taxi. If you are saying at the Pen, you take the Pen boat to the central pier and catch the water taxi from there. There is an uncrowded tourist boat, which I avoid, but as first-timers, it means you have commentary telling you a bit about what you are seeing. I prefer no commentary, but do what makes sense for you. A ticket for the tourist boat lasts all day, so you can take it as much as you want.

For Thai food, Nahm, in the Metropolitan Hotel is excellent. I ate there in January 2016. I've eaten at a lot of restaurants in Bangkok, over many years, but definitely plan to eat there again on the upcoming winter trip.

Have a great honeymoon.

Happy Travels!

Guenmai - Coincidently, I ended up making a reservation at Nahm this morning. Thanks for confirming that this is a good choice!

Also- rhkkmk , I'm waiting on a response from tours with tong. Their prices are reasonable and they seem to be accommodating to tailoring tours around individual preferences.

In the evening go to Asiatique by taking the Anatara Hotel boat from the sky train. It stops at Asiatique before continuing on to the Anatara hotel. Do not take the Asiatique boat as it gets very crowded. Restaurants and shops and if you like you can see the Calypso Cabaret ( very entertaining ladyboy show, but you will need to get tickets ahead of time and can be done on line)

Hope that you enjoy the food there. My best friend and I really enjoyed it and she has also eaten at a lot of restaurants over many years of going to Bangkok.

The Metropolitan Hotel is also very nice. I stayed there when they first opened. When my Thai friends and I walked over to the hotel (Jan 2016) so that I could make my Nahm reservation in person, I mentioned to the desk clerk that I had stayed there shortly after they had opened. The desk clerk mentioned how many years they've been open and I was stunned as I didn't realize that so many years had passed by so quickly. I think he said that they've been open somewhere from 15-17 years. However, Nahm wasn't there back then.

If you arrive to the Metropolitan Hotel early, there's a really nice bar lounge that you access from outside. You can sit in there and have a few drinks and snacks and then walk back into the main lobby of the hotel where Nahm is located. My best friend and I did that and were the only two people in the bar lounge as others were waiting in the main, hotel lobby.

Happy Travels!

Nahm should be a great choice for dinner but just as an aside, not all dinner boats are just so-so. The one from the Oriental was really nice. We've tried several of them, from the Shangri-la to River City to Oriental. It is nice to see the city all lit up at night from the river.

There are many rooftop bars in Bangkok. We've been to Sky Bar, Vertigo at Banyan Tree, Red Sky at Central World mall (top of the hotel there), the Marriott on Sukhumvit soi 57, Long Table on Sukhumvit soi 16, and the Sofitel on Sukhumvit near soi 15. All have amazing views. I think my favorite would be the Sofitel on Sukhumvit. The outdoor space there is much smaller than the other places, but I like sitting right at the glass wall edge and feeling the wonderful breeze. It is a short walk from the Asok sky train station, if you care to hop on the sky train to get around the city. I like taking the sky train as traffic can mean sitting in a taxi for an extended time.

I didn't visit the Grand Palace until my 11th trip to Bangkok, but would agree it should be your first place to check out. That and Watt Pho and Watt Arun just across the river would be on my must see list if you have just one day.

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks again, Guenmai !

simpsonc510 , I see that the Banyan tree is right next door to the Metropolitan Hotel, so it would be convenient to go the Vertigo bar before dinner for drinks and to watch the sunset.

Has anyone been to Vertigo for sunset, or is somewhere else better for sunset?

Thanks.

There have been lots of reports here from people who have had drinks at Vertigo. (I'm not a fan of rooftop bars, so I haven't been.) Are there particular questions you have?

If you are going to Nahm the same evening, I'd go to Vertigo, even though there are plenty of other rooftop bars. Convenience matters.

I prefer vertigo to sky bar...

there are several nice restaurants in the banyon tree. you might consider one of those for one stop eating and drinking.

Perelhoneymoon: Why not just do Nahm and Vertigo at Banyan Tree? I would not cancel a reservation at Nahm.

Happy Travels!

Guenmai, so far that seems to be the plan! Just wasn't sure if I should go to Vertigo before dinner or after dinner. i.e. is it better for sunset or its nice anytime and has a better atmosphere later in the night?

Thanks again!

I haven't been to Vertigo. I guess it will depend on what all you have to do earlier that day since you only have one day in Bangkok. If you're out all day and then need to get back to wherever your hotel is and change clothes before dinner, then maybe it would be best to go to Vertigo after dinner as not to have to rush unless you are able to comfortably make it there before dinner.

Remember that there is no skytrain really near the Metropolitan Hotel so you'll be in a taxi unless you're staying in a hotel very nearby. My Thai friends and I walked from the Dust Thani Hotel to the Metropolitan Hotel, for me to make the reservation for dinner at Nahm, but for a week later, and we were a bit soaked of sweat since it was in the day time. LOL!

The Dust Thani Hotel is next to the skytrain station and I was staying at the Dust Thani for one night although I rent an apartment a few skytrain stops away, but I like to keep up on the hotel scene which is why I pack a light tote bag and head to a hotel of my choice, try out the restaurants at the hotel, go to the spa, stay overnight, and then head back to the apartment the next morning. Sort of like a staycation from the vacation. LOL!

If I were you, I'd just kind of go with the flow and see what you two are up to when you get there. At least you have a dinner reservation which is the main thing. Oh, Nahm has a no-sandal, no-flip flop type of policy although my friend and I saw a couple come in wearing sandals which I wasn't happy about as I had a really nice pair of sandals that I wanted to wear with my outfit, but didn't.

Have fun in Bangkok and on your honeymoon and I hope you report back. I can't wait to get back to Bangkok in the winter for my 6 weeks in S.E. Asia of which three of them I spend in Bangkok. Smiles.

Happy Travels!
