What's the Catch? Delta FF miles

I have received an offer to allow me to transfer my ff miles to another person's account. Delta's message says 20% bonus will be added to the mileage transfer. Neither DH nor I has many miles in the account right now and it would bump one of us up to free ticket land (admittedly not an easy thing with DL). What's the catch?

It has a pretty high cost for doing it. Even with 20% bonus, it probably still won't make sense for most.

cmcfong Mar 26th, 2008 08:33 AM

I hadn't read the fine print and didn't know there was a cost. Thank you. That does clear up the catch!

Apparently, most are smart to see that 20% bonus is not worth the $0.01/mile transfer cost.

So, now, they're making it 100% bonus, from an email I just got.

For example, deduct 30,000 miles from your account, pay $300, and a different account can get 60,000 miles.

100% might be worthwhile to consolidate my in-laws orphan miles into my husband's account :?

rkkwan Apr 17th, 2008 10:27 AM

Well, be careful. I don't see it mentioned on dl.com. Maybe this is targeted, I'm not sure.

Patty Apr 17th, 2008 10:51 AM

Forgot to say, I got the email too.

I mean we.

hummm...this might be worth it to transfer from dh's into mine. I have not recieved "the email" though.

DonTopaz Apr 17th, 2008 01:15 PM

Unless it's targetted, what's the difference between this and selling miles outright?

For example, suppose I need 15,000 miles. I could transfer 5000 miles to my dog Fido's account (giving him 10,000), then Fido could transfer those 10,000 back to my account. Voila, I've got my 15k miles.

I dunno what DL charges to buy the miles through reg purchase, but the comparison would be interesting.

rkkwan Apr 17th, 2008 01:17 PM

It is a form of selling miles. Just like the post I just read about AA letting people "revive" their expired miles, again at $0.01/mile rate.

BTW, all these offers carry an additional $30 service fee.

Patty Apr 17th, 2008 03:15 PM

Oh wait, I didn't read the email too carefully the first time. It appears to be a targeted offer to transfer out so it seems I need to find out if my in-laws were targeted not the other way around.

lakeside77 Apr 17th, 2008 03:18 PM

so the 100% bonus wasn't offered across the board?

Patty Apr 17th, 2008 03:33 PM

On my email it says "Only members that receive the original email from Delta are eligible for the promotion. Offer is not transferable."

MomDDTravel Apr 18th, 2008 07:02 AM

bummer Patty - I wanted to transfer dh's 15,000 miles - giving me 30,000 more - I am still chasing a number of miles to try to get two business tickets next spring. Looking for all sorts of ways to get them...

I got the email - I am not premium, but have some miles. The rest of the family are members and have very few miles, maybe that's why I was targeted.
