What snacks do you bring?

We are flying Jet Blue to Washington DC. I can only think of dried fruit..any other ideas...?cheese?..

Peanut butter will fill you up, it is a good source of protein, and proteins won't make you fat. Skip the carbs. I always pack a jar and a plastic spoon when I travel. Goes with red wine, too.

dried fruit, fresh fruit, cheese, crackers, sausage, yogurt (with an ice pack unless you'll eat it right away), peanuts (easier to eat than peanut butter and no sugar!), other nuts, granola, cereal bars, popcorn, sandwiches, muffins, cookies, hard boiled eggs, tuna salad in a plastic container, etc.

Really, just about anything that doesn't need to be heated is fair game if you take a small ice pack, and lots of things don't need cooling at all.

Oh, and proteins, just like fat and carbs, will make you fat. Everything, even lettuce, has the potential to make you fat if you eat too much of it. Besides, peanut butter has more fat than protein anyway. It's still a great food, but don't fall for the belief that anything is safe from "making you fat". :)

My favorite new snack is Tuna Snacks, I'm sure they must have them in US, I get mine at WalMart.
You get a sm can of tuna (or salmon) already mixed with mayo, 6 crackers & a spoon. Light to carry & don't need ice packs if concerned about carrying an extra cooler bag.

Lettuce will make you fat? Now I've heard everything. It takes more calories to digest lettuce than what it contains.

Anyway, if the person next to you is annoying, open a can of smelly tuna fish. Before long, you could have the entire row to yourself.

Wow...what good ideas. Thanks...

There was a similar thread about a week ago.

Suggestions ranged from the simple to quite a spread.

OK, the lettuce was an exaggeration. Still, it's just wrong to say that protein (especially in the form of high fat, high sugar peanut butter) won't make you fat. That was the point I hope anyone reading my post got.

A good snack should fill you up and keep you filled up for awhile. You can either eat a bag of potato chips (lots of calories) or a smaller amount of protein (less calories and less fat calories)

Peanut butter does have calories and fat, but I can't imagine eating the whole jar in one sitting. A great snack! An entire box of candy at one sitting--no problem, it's gone.

I like to scarf down a couple cans of sardines

MarthaT Apr 29th, 2005 07:18 AM

You have got to be careful about peanuts because of people with life threatning allergies.
On an international flight last month before we got going the FA announced that such a person was on the plane and if anyone brought nuts please do not open them.

LoveItaly Apr 29th, 2005 08:18 AM

Please, think about the "aroma" of food that you will be eating as airplanes are so packed. Also, bring a plastic ziplock bag to put your garbage in, again due to aromas.

I always bring enough sardines for my seatmates but they always decline.

I always bring chocolate, chocolate and chocolate! : )

J62 Apr 30th, 2005 12:25 PM

did I hear someone mention chocolate! :)

wally34949 Apr 30th, 2005 12:54 PM

I remember reading an article on the Internet recently about the 5 best foods for men and women. On the list for men were tomatos, peanut butter, and osters. For women it included flax seed and papaya. Ah heck, just bring some chocolate.

You are funny Wally.

That said I love Cadbury fruit and nut bar.

For plane rides I find its best to bring all your food. Airline food is never food you would eat otherwise. Bring gourmet sandwhiches in a cooler, you will be glad you did. I would not mess with a million snacks. A lot of trash for yet again perhaps junk you would not normally eat? Would you be asking for suggestions if you ate snack regularly.

I have gotten carried away when traveling with kids buy assorted chocolate bars from England, toys blah blah blah. All I did was get the kids good and sick when we reached our destination.

I hate to bring this up as it has already been chewed and chewed and spit out and chewed... but squeezable peanut butter (which requires no knife) is always top on my list. While traveling on the train from Venice to Rome last year we had packed away some rolls and crackers and it was a filling snack that didn't make us feel sick. Also just put the p.b. straight on a chocolate bar yum! The best!

I have a friend who is a singer and can't eat much before a performance which leads to odd meal times. She has Zone bars to keep going. I tried some after she stayed with us and they were actually not bad. Some better than other (of course the CHOCOLATE ones!). They came in handy when traveling in Brazil and trying to kep blood sugar from dropping during early morning canoe rides. I'll bring some on our next flight.

On my recent trip from Chicago to Maui on American (no food) Airlines, I brought sandwiches on good rolls, the mini bags of carrots, and cold shrimp with homemade cocktail sauce. We used a lightweight insulated bag with the cooler packs and had a gourmet feast.
