Michael from NY, what on earth did you think you were doing reviving this old mess? What possible contribution to the quality of life did you think you were making? Just wanted to kvetch and provoke and antagonize and pontificate and had to go ALL the way back to this one? Jeez, fella, get a life.

Unless everyone can in the row can agree, the person in the window seat should have ultimate veto power over the shade. THere doesn't seem to be another fair way to do it (by the way, i'm always ask for an aisle seat - so this isn't out of selfishness). Perhaps the problem here is we have people who are already crabby from being in the middle seat. No one likes it, but it happens to all of us at times.
There have been times when I WAS in the window seat and felt compelled to close the shade because my neighbor felt the need to practically crawl into my lap to look out the window/ A kid I could understand, but who are these adults doing it? Anyone else with this experience?

Wow, Holly, good thing you didn't let them see out the window! Can't have any of that! I mean, they got the middle seat -- it was probably their own fault -- they shouldn't expect to see out the window. Not your problem -- good for you for protecting that gorgeous lap of yours.

When I posted that, I had not yet heard, was just about to.
One of my favorite sights out a plane window has always been the sight of Manhattan from 30,000 feet (flying to/from Boston from the south). I could see the WTC -- what would we give to see that again now?

There is a really simple solution to this problem. It's called tinting. Cars use it with great success. There are levels of tinting that will allow a pleasant view and shielding enough to show the movie(new video systems in cars). They wouldn't even have to do it with all windows(cost constraints), just the ones affecting the movie screens. Instead of bickering amongst yourselves try suggesting this to the airlines.
