Watch: Passengers learns that plane might have to ditch in Pacific
On Tuesday night (US time), a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles was midway in its flight when the crew was alerted to a possible fire and made the decision to land immediately. Here's a link to an amazing video made by one of the passengers as they first learn that there's a problem, then hear they might have to ditch in the ocean, then are instructed to put on the life vests, then told that they'll be landing on a remote airstrip, and finally land. The tension is obvious as word of the possible ditching is first relayed, as is the relief when the passengers hear that they won't have to ditch.
(The plane in fact landed on one of the Aleutian islands, on a military outpost that is available for civilian emergency landings. After the plane was check out, they flew on to Anchorage and then finally to LAX.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KivHg...ature=youtu.be |
Smoke is very dangerous. Remember Swiss Air 111...
Anyways, they continued on the plane to ANC, where Cathay flew another plane from HKG to take the passengers to LAX. Only 16 hours late and a story to tell. |
I was on a plane when the cabin started filling with smoke upon takeoff as the engine caught fire. They immediately turned the plane around and we landed safely but it was terrifying. We had to exit down the emergency slides which was also quite scary. We were very lucky that it didn't happen over the ocean. I feel for those people.

Here is an article about it:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...-10427107.html It says the plane was a 777. Interesting photo. |
Not sure if I was advised that my flight may have to ditch in the ocean that making a video for You Tube would be high on my list of priorities. An alternative Cathay Pacific video https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5oGPSduXNxw
