VA Upper Class SFO-LHR
Got Virgin Atlantic Upper Class for SFO-LHR by using Miles through Delta.
This segment was part of a flight booked through to FCO/Verona on Alitalia but it made for such a long day that I ditched the later segments and booked GermanWings/EuroWings (new name) from LHR to Venice instead, as noted on another thread.
If you buy the Upper Class Virgin Atlantic: ticket you can get a complimentary chauffeured ride to the airport, but NOT when you book with miles as I did.
VA ClubHouse in SFO very nice. Long and narrow, with lots of windows. Full meal service from a limited menu, including cocktails (Bellinis!), decent wines, starters, main dishes, desserts. Lots of hip chairs, tables and chairs, business center, 2 WCs and a third one with a shower. Very nice service, nice food for a lounge. I like the BA lounge at SFO – if memory serves, you can board from the lounge. In this case, the Clubhouse is before you go through security, but they tell you when to go and they in fact will escort you to the security line (priority).
I had seat 2k on the upper floor of the 747. About 10 seats in this section—self contained flatbed seats, great on your own and maybe less cozy for a couple.
Amenities: kit is a long and narrow canvas zippered bag; minimal compared to other biz kits and much less awesome than, say, Lufthansa first class kits, though it makes for a nice case for pens etc. in handbag after the trip.
They DO hand out sleep sets! Black, basic but nice drawstring ties for waist and leg cuffs. Neckline cut slightly high, at least in the medium. I had dressed comfy with a long skirt and cotton top but decided to use the jammies to keep my clothes fresher for the trip. Only hard part, changing in the WC. Post-note: several washes and the jammy bottoms/sweats still holding strong!
Service was outstanding – we seem to have one dedicated FA for our ten seats. Brought drinks (I declined—had 2 in the Clubhouse) crisps, and later meal; I filled out a breakfast menu card for the a.m. and it was just right.
Overall: Very happy with VA SFO to LHR. Would definitely use in the future.

I think we all knew that you were using initials and not the official 2 letter code. I have flown Upper several times, usually on one of their Airbuses. If you are flying back in Upper from LHR, be sure to leave enough time to enjoy the Clubhouse which is very nice.
