Using travel guard insurance
Hi,
We booked our flight from Calgary to Delhi through Yatra.com back in October. Bought travel guard insurance 2 days before our departure. On the day of departure my husband go sick (night before). Went to the door and were advised not safe to travel, stomach flu! So, now I try to contact Yatra to cancel my flight but were told, it's with the airlines, so you need to cal them. Tried the claims department at Travel Guard, but they are closed on weekend. Tried klm, and they cancelled my outward journey but nt the return and told me that I have only Today to either rebook or lose all my money. They don't have anything available for my other options, o for me the bet thing right now is to cancel the flight but the airlin won't give my money back. So, what can I do? My insurance coverage says sickness is a covered reason. Do I just sit back and wait for claims department? It's a big $8000 amount, so really nervous about it. Please guide.

Good luck with this one. Purchasing insurance two days before departure, then husband falling sick the next evening, then missing departure the following day...? Travel Guard may be excused for suspecting insurance fraud of some sort, will probably question the circumstances very closely.
How will you prove your husband wasn't already ill when you purchased the policy?

To juila1 - not sure how can I prove that he wasn't already sick! I know our genuine situation does sound fishy and that's why I am more worried! We ate out the day before and maybe the food he ate got him sick. He has the stomach flu. This is not something that is in our control.
To NoFlyZone - I called them but they said that they cannot process a claim, so cannot accept or deny anything over phone.
I am just worried sick!

Normally, you have to buy the insurance within a certain amount of time of booking your trip or within a period following last payment.
You most likely waited too long to buy insurance. If you were honest about the dates you booked the trip when applying, I doubt they would have covered you - that is -if you told them you were flying in 2 days.

No I told them, I was told I have 24 hours before the flight to buy insurance. It's international insurance and something different than the regular insurance. They have my exact dates of when I purchased and when I was flying. If they sold me the insurance, they should cover it also. Hopefully!

I just looked at a policy I had a couple of months ago, and yes, you can buy up to a day before your trip and be covered. But things amy be different in Canada, so make sure you talk to the travel assistance people.

I just collected from Travel guard. Call the number and they will give you a claim number and send the forms . You will have to supply a doctor's statement and medical info.along with proof of air fare paymment and cancelation terms. It takes about a month to get your money back. I had to cancel a portion of my trip and my doctor just gave me a noyt saying he felt the tour portion was too much as I had a small stroke and it was too regimented for me. It can't all be done on the phone but it will get you started

Hi,
As you have written its bcz of emergency sickness you missed flight then 1. as per airlines policy you can claim full refund form airlines but need to put efforts from Yatra.com to get it approved. you need to submit your medical document to Yatra.com to get it refunded.
As per Rules you can claim full refund but it will consume lots of time to get it approved.
Regards,
Ram

You need to purchase trip insurance within 14 days of buying airline tickets only if you need/want coverage for pre-existing conditions. Sudden ailments would usually be covered whenever you bought the tickets. I fell and broke my shoulder, and Travel Guard handled the claim expeditiously and refunded my and my husband's ticket prices.

I know when I purchased travel insurance there was a statement in there about coverage for medical but also coverag if it wasn't a pre-existing condition. I think your best luck would be to call the travel insurance company directly. If their claims dept is closed, someone in their regualr customer service should be able to help.

I would be very surprised if any insurance company pad a claim when you have made no effort to mitigate your loss. Ideally, you should have contacted the airline and cancelled the tickets as soon as you knew you would be unable to fly. You should now contact the airline immediately, and ask that they make an adjustment because of your medical emergency. If they offer less than a full refund (assuming they give full refunds for medical emergencies) document what they offered and contact the insurance company for the balance.

The restriction about buying a policy by a certain date applies to having coverage for pre-existing conditions. Otherwise there's no problem with purchasing close to a departure date.
I can't imagine that stomach flu would be considered a pre-existing condition unless someone had been sick at the time of purchasing the policy. But you just never know.
We made a claim on a Travel Guard policy when I fell and broke a shoulder. The process was quite easy, and the refund came fairly quickly. But you will need documentation from a doctor.
