Skybus to start US service

Skybus is a new low-cost carrier in the US. They have begun selling tickets and will start flying in May. The first 10 tickets sold on each flight will be $10. It's totally no-frills. You have to pay for everything: water, food, blankets, checked luggage.

I still think water should be free. It is a health issue.

While Ryanair's CEO often use this type of tone, even they know better than put them on the official website.

with the rising fuel costs I can understand making us travelers pay for water, food, etc. But checked luggage!!!! That definitely goes too far.

Everything is directly copied from Ryanair. Except for that "no outside food or drink" part, which they go beyond Ryanair.

I'll be interested to see how this works out. They aren't local to me, but for a dirt cheap fare they aren't that far either. I can sit for 2 or 3 hours without eating or drinking water.

If someone goes into the bathroom to eat, I suppose there's not much they could do, unappetizing as that might sound.

I wonder if they would also try to ban gum and hard candies and other aids that prevent your ears from suffering.

Lowest paid pilots??? I doubt they will pay lower than Air Midwest, Colgan, Mesa, and the other bottom feeders.

And $9/hr for flight attendants isn't unheard of at those other crap airlines I mentioned above.

Regional and low-cost airlines have started a race to the bottom. Let's see how little we can pay our employees and how crappy we can treat them. I refuse to buy tickets on crap like Chataqua (sp is so wrong), Mesa, and Republic.

What if someone has a health issue and needs to eat or drink? I don't see how Skybus can keep them from doing that. That rule is really a lawsuit waiting to happen, if you ask me. What if a woman tries to breastfeed her baby? Are they going to object to that as well? Or would they try to confiscate a bottle? Yes, I'm being sarcastic. But this rule is ridiculous. I'm sure they are offering nasty, unhealthy junk food full of preservatives.

On another forum, I've heard of suggestions like bringing kosher food on board. Anybody can be Jewish for a few hours, right?

The best time to pour your carry on alcohol into a drink or eat food is during take-off and landings when the flight attendants are required to sit.

I wish them well, but even for $40.80 round trip with taxes, I don't have a lot of desire to go to Columbus, Ohio arriving at 1AM.

Keith - I'm with you. When they first announced their service, I was interested because we have a daughter going to college 35 mi from Columbus. From everything I've seen so far, think we'll stick with CO and WN.

We'll take a look. We live in CLT & both are families are in Ohio. For $36.60 R/T it is cheaper than driving, & quicker. Just have to plan ahead, which we do anyway.

What a piece of crap airline. Just looked, out of curiosity, and priced a trip that I just paid a bit over $300 for on NWA to SEA. Of course, it's not the same itinerary, because it would be from Columbus, but it was $400+baggage+plus soda(s)...and THEN one would have to drive drom Bellingham, which regardless of what their b.s. website says, is NOT easy access in my book.

CRAP, CRAP, CRAP!!! I'll be surprised if they make it.

The $10 tickets were an enticement to get you to fly. They are supposed to have $10 fares on every flight.

They are charging $5.00 for 1 checked bag, charging for food. To have a guaranteed seat you have to pay extra. Flight attendants are paid a base hourly rate plus commission on food and drinks. They do not have an 800# and everything must be booked online. If you have a customer service issue, again online. They also do not own a jetaway and are using stairs at Port Columbus which will be interesting in the winter.

As for the fares, I priced them going out to Seattle and American beat them hands down.

The CEO worked for Southwest and second in command used to work for Ryan Air. They are owned by Nationwide Insurance, The Dispatch Media Group and some other heavy hitters in Columbus. They get a lot of free pub from the media here in Columbus because the Dispatch Media group owns both the paper and Channel 10, CBS affiliate, radio stations etc.

Southwest has already offered special $15.00 fares out of Columbus. I saw US Air lowered change fees. Don't know if it is related or not. It will be interesting to watch.
