US customs pre clearance

Hi all

I will be flying into New York city from Toronto Pearosn intl airport with a transit in Montreal Pierre Elliot airport, with a departure time of 1230am on May 16.
Im currently on a J1 visa and my Ds-2019 has an end date of May 16 2015, therefore I am anxious whether can I officially enter US territory on time.

My questions are as such:
1) Does anybody know if I will be going through US pre-clearance customs at Toronto or Montreal?

2) And if I do clear US customs at Toronto beforr 12am; will it be considered as official entry into the US on May 15?

Yes, you'll clear US Immigration & Customs in Toronto.

Can't answer your second question.

Sorry, I mis-read your first question. If you have a connecting flight in Montreal you'll deplane there and clear US Immigration & Customs in Montreal.

Still can't answer your second question. Suggest you contact the US Customs and Border Protection Agency (part of the US Dept. of Homeland Security). You'll find contact info here: www.cbp.gov

RoamsAround: I quoted the instructions from the State Dept. website on the OP's other thread. The OP has a sponsor who he needs to contact.

Isn't the visa expiration date the date you have to leave the USA? If it expires at 12:01 AM on the 16th then you will have overstayed your visit by the time your flight departs Montreal.

I hope there is a grace period or it expires at 11:59 PM on the 16th and you have a flight out of the country before then.

mrwunrfl: There are specific instructions on the State Dept. website regarding the Ds-2019. It isn't the visa so much that is the issue.

>>Who should I contact if I have a question or concern about my Form DS-2019?

The designated sponsor, whose name and telephone number can be found on the Form DS-2019, should be contacted for questions and concerns about your Form DS-2019. Your designated sponsor is responsible for assisting and advising you on all matters regarding your exchange visitor program<<

>> It isn't the visa so much that is the issue.

What is the issue?

mrwunrfl Apr 14th, 2015 10:53 PM

That you think the OP should ask the sponsor instead of asking at fodors is a different issue.

>>What is the issue?<<

Primarily the DS-2019

>>That you think the OP should ask the sponsor instead of asking at fodors is a different issue.<<

It isn't that i think he should ask his sponsor - I don't care one way or the other. it is that the State Department says that is the only place the OP can get his questions answered.

>>. . . sponsor is responsible for assisting and advising you on all matters regarding your exchange visitor program<<
