US Airways ends movies on domestic flights

US Airways says it will start removing in-flight entertainment systems on domestic flights to save about $10M annually in fuel and other costs. Spokesman Phil Gee said the movie systems weight about 500 pounds each, forcing planes to burn more fuel. Gee says US Airways will cut the movie systems from about 200 aircraft. US Airways will keep the movie systems on it's wide-body aircraft for international and Hawaii flights.

I listened to Peter Greenberg's travel talk show for a while this morning, while driving on the highway (it's on XM).

Peter had a guest on who noted that US Airways will start charging for ALL beverages, including water. I think the date to start doing this is in September, but I'm not 100% sure of that.

The ONLY way you can get water for free is if you have a medication in your hand that you MUST take, and you don't have the $2 needed to buy water.

Greenberg's guest (wish I could remember her web site) had some interesting comments about how the airlines have to cut back on weight and increase $$$ and how they might do it. One thing she said was that, there WILL be video, in the seatbacks, but they will figure out a way to charge you for using it.

I think if you go to petergreenberg.com you might be able to find out who this guest was on today's program. If I remember correctly, her web site name had runway in it... ??

I'll take my iPod and a magazine anyday, no worries if the "entertainment" system isn't working.

Also, I ALWAYS buy one or two bottles of water post security. That way I have control over something as basic as water.

We carry empty water bottles through security, and fill them with tap water after, to take on the plane.

Voila - Free water.

Depends where you are traveling.

Some places you canNOT take your own water on to the plane, even what you purchase after security, or fill yourself from the drinking fountain (leaving Mexico, for example).

Thanks for the info Suze. I was not aware of that. I assumed once you got beyond security you were free to bring bottled drinks on board regardless of where you were.

Do you know why they have such a restriction?

Ya got me ;-)

But it was causing all kinds of comotion recently departing Puerto Vallarta. People had stocked up on cans of fancy Starbucks drinks, gatorade, bottled water, etc. after security, but it was announced they could not be brought on the plane and was taken away at the gate as you boarded.

Amazing. Wonder where else this happens? Should you or I start a new thread on this topic?

I've been to many airports all over the world and never witnessed what suze went through.

It's possible that it was a directive just for that day because of a possible security threat.

No need to start a new thread.

To AAFrequentFlyer, that makes sense. The idea of such a restriction gave me a momentary panic.

I've always been under the impression that the point of the in flight movies was to keep the natives from getting restless and give the FAs a break. Now with nothing to keep them occupied, passengers will get hungry and thirsty and buy more snacks and beverages. Clever!

What domestic flights show movies?? I must have been flying SWA for too long.

When I was leaving SYD, passengers were searched for liquids at the gate (not security) for US bound flights that leave Sydney. We saw people taking liquids through security. Again, having people toss out those expensive stuff they just purchased for flight at the gate made for a scene. Another place I recall being searched just prior to boarding & not the general security area was in Iceland.

AA - I had the same experience as Suze in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Bali over the course of a 2 week trip.

NO it was not just that day. It happens every time I've flown out of Mexico, for at least the past several years.

Why can't we start a new thread if someone wants to, AAFF? Just because you have not experienced it doesn't make the topic invalid.
