Upgrading a basic economy ticket with miles
 

Can anyone speak from experience - Is it possible to upgrade an international basic economy ticket using FF miles? (specifically AA and BA from USA to France)
My friend says she upgrades basic economy using miles on domestic flights and that she has colleagues who upgrade from basic to main cabin with miles when flying internationally.

Yes it can be done -- but only if one has premium status in the FF program. Just a regular passenger without status -- it isn't possible.

Thanks for that info - sounds completely reasonable. I tried to find the information on the airlines' websites, but it was rather vague and maybe that's why.

Oh -- my comment was re AAdvantage/an AA marketed booking. I have no idea about BA Avios (which is a completely different program and has different rules)
