As to availability, it certainly helps that I am traveling solo!

That is an option for a pair of travelers: go on different days or different flights or carriers on the same day or different classes of service. If you don't find availability for two, then search for one and see what is available and then consider it at least for a half-second. It might be a very poor option, but still the best one.

You never know what might become available. You could book on different flights or classes and later find availability so that you can be on the same plane, same class. Or not, so then be prepared to fly what you got or not go (and pay the cancellation fees on the two tickets).

The only option that is out for me is using a standard award.

I agree with mrwunrfl. My husband and I travelled in first class on saver awards one day apart because we could not manage to get two seats the same day (ORD-BKK) for the Christmas and New Year holiday 2011. We'll try to do it again this year!

I was thinking of you when I wrote that because I knew you had done it before. Could also mention how you saw that seats were opening up at the last minute for that July trip this year or last year.

NH = ANA = All Nippon Airways
TG = Thai Airways
QR = Qatar Airways

September 14 is the last date that you can book a Mileage Plus award ticket flying on QR. It would be good for travel up to a year after booking.

Yep, it was last year (yet another first class BKK trip) that was pretty much last-minute and it ended up being around the world in first class on UA/TH/SIN/LH. It was great.

I've never tried QR, but I don't really want to fly to BKK by way of the middle east. I'd prefer NRT/HKG or FRA/AMS, etc.

When I got those two saver awards last Christmas the agent on the phone assured me (yeah, right) that availability would show up and we would both fly together... that didn't happen; and I was watching everyday! It turned out fine though. I had 24 hours to myself in BKK before DH arrived!

I recently booked an economy Saver Award through UA on LH metal. Traveling SFO through FRA to MUC (stopover), then on to BCN three days later. Return is from BCN through MUC to SFO. Love it that we can stop over in Munich to visit friends. I booked by phone (long story--UA website glitch) and was given both a UA and a LH PNR, even though all flights are on LH. I went to the LH website and found both transatlantic flights included assigned seats, which I wasn't particularly happy with, so I changed them on the LH site; I haven't checked back to see if my choices are still in place. The FRA-MUC, MUC-BCN, BCN-MUC flights are about two hours each, and the seats are currently unassigned. I may phone LH to ask about getting those assigned as well.

One tip if you're searching for flight availability for award travel on the UA website: The inventory changes daily (sometimes more than once per day), so if you don't see acceptable flights, check daily. They always seem to load new inventory at 9:00 pm PDT.

Today would be a good day to look for award travel to Asia over Christmas and New Year's.

I've been searching just about every day for a different option (from UA) for flying LAX-NRT on the way to Phuket. I want ANA flight 005 but am convinceed that it is not going to happen.

But starting last night I noticed that there are suddenly a lot of premium class award seats available on Singapore Airlines. That is, at least one business class or even first class SQ flights on several dates.

Several dates are available in business class in November and December for LAX-NRT, NRT-SIN, LAX-ICN, ICN-SIN. In January there are first class seats from SIN to SFO with a stop in Hong Kong. There are also Singapore premium class seats from NYC.

I am considering making a change to my itinerary.

I have: LAX-NRT in F on United, overnight at Narita, then F on Thai to BKK connecting to biz class to Phuket.

Am considering changing that to Orange County (SNA) to SFO in F on United, connecting to Singapore Airlines first class to Seoul, 1 hr 35 min connection in Seoul to business class on Asiana nonstop to Phuket. Gets me to Phuket 19 hours earlier. The only drawback is the 12:35 AM arrival in Phuket.

I should have posted a new thread about the Singapore Airlines award availability so that more fodorites might see it. The party ended Sunday night.
