Ultra Low Cost Carrier Launches New Luggage Policy in Lieu of Raising Fares

Looks like Spirit Airlines is joining the luggage game. The airline is raising the "checked luggage" fare.

Spirit Airlines has announced its innovative approach to address rising fuel prices with the introduction of its new luggage policy. Designed to give customers more flexibility when traveling and to continue its commitment to offering the lowest possible fares, Spiritís new luggage policy gives passengers the option to avoid the increased cost of travel due to rising fuel costs by packing lighter. Less luggage means less weight, which translates to lower fuel burn and allows Spirit to lower its costs further while being friendlier to the environment.

Beginning February 20, 2008, Spiritís luggage fees will increase from $5 to $10 per checked piece of luggage if pre-reserved online at www.spiritair.com, and from $10 to $20 per checked piece of luggage if requested at the airport. Passengers may still carry on one piece of luggage at no charge.
