Having lived overseas for much of my life I generally prefer to make long distance flights with non-USA carriers. The Asian airlines are, in general, especially good. Also, flying the country's flagship carrier generally means more options if there is a problem along the line. I would also never ever fly overseas on an E-ticket and I always get a written confirmation of my outbound flights before arriving at airport (hotels overseas most adept at providing this).
Have fun.....Singapore is an EZ introduction into Asia. You'll enjoy it.

Hi
Just done a round the world - Mexicana was mainly awful (with one senior steward exception), Lauda Air - with a pregnant passenger dieing at my feet (still following through as if I was American andit had happened in the US, there would now be a multi-million dollar law suit), Air Canada which was fine (except awful food) and UA - which I had no complaints about at all. Very good service (though crap food) - pleasantly surprised by them
