TSA Pre-check

On my last two flights on American, I had TSA pre-check printed on my boarding pass. I didn't apply for it, but I read somewhere that airlines can nominate people for pre-check status. So I'm guessing that AA nominated me. I'm not sure why, because I don't fly a lot, but I've been an AAdvantage frequent flyer member for many years, so maybe that's why.

Anyway, does anyone know whether this will last forever, or does it only apply for a few flights, or for a limited time? And will it apply if I fly a different airline?

It's nice not to have to get undressed in the security line, so I hope it lasts!

It's random...some flights I get it and some I don't.

My experience is just like elberko's.

Most likely it will not be permanent. Right now it's being randomly given on a per flight basis to a few travelers in hopes of getting them to enroll in the "Trusted Traveler" program (which has a cost of $85).

I've had it on every flight in the last year+

They've been 1 on JetBlue (my first ever flight w/ them and no 'status' of any sort), about 13 AA flights (member of AAdvantage but just Gold), and 2 Southwest flights (member of Rapid Rewards but haven't flown them in nearly 8 years)

I never enrolled in anything (did get Global Entry in October but that was after the majority of these flights.)

Once you enroll in Global entry (which we have done), TSA pre-check is automatic.

Thank you all.

Even with Global Entry, no guarantee you'll get pre-check for any particular flight. We are global entry, but from time to time, we will not get pre-check. It is random.

Kathie, it was my understanding when we enrolled in Global Entry, that it included TSA Pre-Check.
According to the Global entry website, "Global Entry members are eligible for TSA PreCheck benefits."
Not all airlines and not all airports participate.

I have not enrolled in anything. I get it frequently between BOS-DCA.

Yes, with GE one is eligible for PreCheck benefits ... but not every time. It's still a lottery although with GE the chances of being granted PC are much higher.

Think about it ... security would be [even more] useless if someone were granted an exemption 100% of the time.

Kathie Feb 3rd, 2015 06:38 AM

Yes, Global entry does make one eligible for TSA pre-check, but that doesn't mean you will get it every time. If you enroll in the (paid) TSA pre-check program, you won't be assured of getting pre-check every time either.

It's like NoFly says.
