travel to Tortola
I'm looking at an AA award flight that goes Miami-San Juan-Tortola. The connection time in San Juan is only 1 hour. That seems much too short to me. Would appreciate knowledgeable input from folks who've traveled this route. Many thanks.

An hour is fine and within the "legal" minimum connect time. Plus there are a number of planes to Tortola so if your arrival is late they should be able to accommodate you later.
|
Thanks for reply. I know that it's "legal," but it seems to me to be awfully tight. Problem is that later flight would be very problematical. We need to catch a ferry from Tortola to Virgin Gorda and I'm not sure any later flight would allow me to do that. Even if yes, it'd get us to our rented villa late at night-- not a great idea. Doesn't one have to be at gate 20 min before boarding time? Even if flight from Miami is on time (as when are planes ever??), is there really enough time to haul over to the "jumper" area?
Other opinions? Thanks again for your input, NoFlyZone. |
With those new restrictions your only option would be to take an earlier flight to SJU or hope you make the connection. I don't see an hour as being terrible providing your incoming flight is reasonably on time; all you have to do is walk from one gate to the next. Otherwise welcome to the fun world of travel.

can you break it up, take the last flight to SJ and go the next day to tortola?

Ah yes, the fun world of travel. We're near 80, so, yes, we've had many years of fun and games in that department. (We've never enjoyed flying, even back when it wasn't so awful.) I thought of staying over in San Juan, but that just complicates the trip too much (at this point in our lives). My memory is that the SJ airport is not small: "walking from one gate to the next" may be a bit of a haul (and our dashing days are behind us). That's why I'm hoping that people may pipe in who know the particular route well.
I think we may have to overnight in Miami and take the 7:30 A.M. flight to SJ. That layover is a couple of hours. We don't like the idea of overnighting and getting up very very early, but may need to. I wonder if people will be able to suggest the best bet hotel, close to the airport, but quiet and clean and not costing an arm and a leg. I'll post on the appropriate board. Meanwhile, thank you. |
Miami has a decent hotel right in the terminal. That (overnighting MIA and early flight to EIS) would be a good option and would make you feel a lot more comfortable.
Last time I looked, it was the Hotel MIA or something close to that. They have (had) an excellent restaurant on the top floor with great views over most of the airport grounds. |
