To pass the time on long haul flights..
Hey there, what are your great tips to pass the time on a long haul flight? (besides movie, crossword, journal...have those on my list already!) thank you in advance.
|
My goal is to sleep as much as possible on any flight.
If I can't sleep or during meals, I listen to audiobooks. |
For me, I can still work sometimes (remote work). That passes the time rather quickly for me.
|
hmmm, an audio book is a good idea. it's at least a bit different. i am trying to switch it up. thanks for the tip.
|
another good idea someone had was learn a few terms of the language of the country i am going to. (japan!)

How about downloading podcasts before you fly?

I enjoy reading, using Duolingo, and learning go. If you don't know the board game go, you should learn it ;) It's pretty fun and there are apps with problems you can solve.
https://online-go.com/learn-to-play-go You can download some stuff from Netflix now, if you have that. I usually prefer not watching comedies because I don't want to be that loud, obnoxious, laughing weirdo on the flight. I like sudoku. If I'm really bored. And once I do everything and lose interest, I fall asleep. |
I just read. Books and magazines. Reading up on where you are visiting is good too... language or guidebooks.
|
I read, I notice you don't seem to consider that possibility. DO you never read a book? I know many people don't ever read nowadays.
For a few hours, I like to listen to podcasts as a top choice. I have many favorites but don't have time to listen to many of them each week, so I download a couple dozen to my Ipod Nano and listen to them. I like this because my podcasts are mostly talking, not music, and you really get a lot more out of them if you are not distracted by watching TV or reading the paper, etc., while they are on. So on a plane, I can just relax and listen to them. |
For years I have always purchased a New Yorker magazine for a flight. It is the only time I read it; the articles and long andethought provoking and best read when I have leisure time without distractions.

I try to sleep, too. Eye mask, headphones (with nothing playing) and my Turtl seal out the world. And make me look ridiculous, but I don't care!
The Turtl: https://smile.amazon.com/Trtl-Pillow...keywords=turtl I alternate Turtl time with reading or watching a movie or show or listening to music or a podcast. I can't imagine there are any really innovative time passing methods out there... options are kinda limited. I admit, I dread it when a person, usually an older person, sits next to me with no means of entertainment. It's rare, but these people seem happy to chat the hours away, and while I feel a bit bad for them, I am not there for that. |
yes, downloading a podcast seems to be a great idea. i read constantly, def. plan on reading during flight. the turtl pillow seems awesome. maybe i'll get that!
|
Wear foam ear plugs on the plane if you don't have a head set and don't want to chat with people. Works a charm.
|
otto, my SO didn't like the Turtl, went back to his conventional neck pillow, so it seems not to be for everyone. But I'm a fan! Prevents one's mouth dropping open, which I hate, lol.

I usually can't work on a long haul, but I do try to save a good book--such as a mystery--or review the relevant language, or read mags. If there are good TV series or a good film (saw Hidden Figures on my June flight) that helps a lot.
Don't forget stretches or getting out and walking a bit for circulation. |
