The Norwegian connection.

Norwegian Air Shuttle, claiming to be the third-largest no-frills airline in Europe with 70 planes in the air, is coming across the Atlantic. Its website already shows flights to begin this month from Ft. Lauderdale and JFK with a price range starting around $800 (plus luggage fee.) However, a report in the Economist says the flights depend on getting the airline's new B-787 Dreamliners back in the sky. Long-distance budget airlines have not been big successes, neither from Asia to Europe nor across the Pacific. But Norwegian is portrayed in the Economist as solidly financed and operates new, fuel-efficient airplanes, so there is some hope (other than Icelandic) for low-fare Atlantic competition. www.norwegian.com
