Terrible Air Canada
My ff UA tickets were issued on Air Canada from SFO to Toronto and Toronto to Madrid. Both flights had non-existent leg room (I am 5'8", being worse than any domestic Asian flight. The male steward on SFO/Toronto was so arrogant and bragged that he never assisted passengers with their carry-on baggage. He was nowhere to be seen on boarding which alerted me, having seen petite Asian women trying their best to help passengers. The crowning achievement for Air Canada was the loss of my luggage upon arrival in Madrid. Two other passengers on the same flight also had no bag on arrival. All further inquiries regarding the loss are funnelled through India. Why is UA using a clearly inferior carrier? Obviously no one else will book them. Do not accept UA routing on Air Canada.

You've had less than satisfactory experience with an airline and you're writing them off forever?
I've flown Air Canada hundreds of times and 1) they've never lost my luggage, 2) generally I've had good service from ground crew and flight attendants, and 3) found Air Canada's longhaul fleet (available on many of the trans-Con flights like SFO-YYZ and the overseas flights) to be at least as spacious/comfortable as any other international carrier and a little more spacious than a number of other carriers (like BA, Virgin, Continental and the old Cathay Eco seats, to name a few).
Not only has Air Canada not lost my luggage, they once went undertook significant efforts to reunite me with an object that turned out not to belong to me (but to belong to someone I knew). AC found an address book and the owner wasn't identified. The book didn't contain my father's phone number (identified as "K's father". They called my dad, who called me, and I called AC back to have a discussion about the address book. As it turned out, we figured out that it belonged to my ex-boyfriend's father, who was very pleased to get his address book back.

OMG, I LOVE Air Canada.
We've flown them overseas 3x, and they are way superior to USAir.
But we had a really unpleasant encounter with one of their reps in the Toronto airport. It was in her discretion to move us up to an available USAir flight departing 3 hours earlier, but she was too lazy to do so.
There's not exactly a lot to do at the Toronto airport for 4.5 hours.

Air Canada has some very tight terms and conditions in their fare rules regarding changes (even same-day changes) on tickets. It used to be easy to walk up and get on an earlier flight if seats were available. Then AC changed its policy and prohibited staff from changing tickets without charging the fee. There may be some exceptions when flights are delayed (or they anticipate significant delays), but I wouldn't jump to blame the gate agent for the problem. He or she might have had no discretion in the circumstances, depending on the terms of your ticket. Also, US Air is a different airline. Even though AC and US have code shares and are members of the same alliance, that doesn't mean that the ticket you bought on one airline can automatically be used on the other airline.

<<Being superior to US Airways is nothing to brag about. I'm not sure it would be possible.
Well, you got me there!
frog - we were told by a different employee that she could have made the change but it was then too late b/c we had already checked our bags through.
The situation was that we asked the first grouchy woman, and she was totally uninterested and had us check our bags through.
By the time we realized this was possible, it was too late b/c our bags were gone. It was really frustrating. We watched 2 USAir flights take off before our scheduled flight.

I think we could put "terrible"_____"insert airline here" on every airline out there. I've flown AC about 20 times and I've never had one problem. Not one! I've flown with U.S carriers and had no problems. Qantas was by far my favourite. We even flew the infamous no perks Ryan Air in Europe with no problems.
At-least you made it there alive...lol.
