Further to the above, just got a BA fare quote Bermuda to Malaga return, via London Gatwick. Total government and airport charges (Bermuda, UK and Spain) 97.77 us dollars. Carrier imposed charge 414 dollars!!

Jill - I'm experiencing the same frustration trying to use my FF miles on AA from DFW to places in Europe. I feel your pain!

Government imposed taxes, one way.

LHR $185, FRA $105, BRU $13.

Even airline employees try to avoid flying through London.

What did you end up booking Jill? We ended up going to Spain last year as a result of the crazy fees - instead of Italy. We flew direct from DFW on mileage tickets and it was really a wonderful choice but I was so frustrated at the fees when booking miles through AA.

We're doing AA and Air Berlin but have multiple stops both ways. On the way home to DFW, we go from NYC to LAX! BUT I didn't have to pay any exorbitant fees!!!

I would rather pay more than fly more (or have additional stops).

I would rather pay more than fly more (or have additional stops).

Well, for a reality check, let's talk about Seattle - Paris using AA miles, for an arbitrary day in January.

Using BA, SEA-xLHR-CDG, 20,000 AA miles, 13 hours, taxes and fees $324.60

Using AA, SEA-xJFK-CDG, 20,000 AA miles, 14 1/4 hours, taxes and fees $5.60

Or, enough savings for a night at a rather nice hotel in Paris, and a decent meal, and probably transport from CDG into town. With change. Just sayin'.

OK Gardyloo. You are absolutely correct. It would depend on how much longer, how many more stops, and what the savings was.

Where (on what page) is the box where you can uncheck BA? I don't see that when I try to look for AAdvantage flights. Am I missing something?

Thanks!!

On AA.com, for award trips, it's on the screen that immediately follows the "calendar" showing availability for a week. The boxes are to the left of flight options.

Don't know how to describe it better.

OK, so we survived the crazy return schedule of Milan - Dusseldorf - LAX - DFW.

We flew Air Berlin for the first 2 legs and it was GREAT! The seats - in coach - were actually comfortable! The Dusseldorf-LAX leg was about 11.5 hours; watched 2 movies and had 2 meals which were surprisingly good. In fact, we bought sandwiches prior to boarding, but ended up eating the airline food too! The attendants were very nice and pleasant.

I had tried to change our return flights, but because of the FF redemption level, it was not possible without incurring additional fees. So thankful it didn't work out because Air Berlin was such a nice alternative to American!

I just booked a round trip from Phx to Zurich on AA flights. THe fare is $861 and CARRIER-IMPOSED FEES ARE $516 (A Whopping 60% of the fare amount ). I am not going thru London or any European countries, why is AA charging so much without disclosing what this CARRIER-IMPOSED FEES are?? Gasoline is $1.69 a gallon, so there should not be a fuel surcharge. Consumers have to stand up against this kind of arbitrary consumer ripoffs from airlines.

Although I agree the fees & taxes are ridiculous, Shufun, that gasoline is low has nothing to do with the price airlines pay for Jet-A. Look more to options, arbitrage, and contracts.

I"m not sure it's AA charging the fees, but I think it's the British airports with expensive landing fees that AA is passing on to the customers. Still, don't like it.

See if paying outright for the tickets (i.e., NOT using FF miles) is much more. Why waste FF miles if yo have to spend so much anyway? I never use BA with my FF miles just for the reason the "savings" comes out to cost so much. We've flown Air Berlin and were very pleased with it.
