Tap airlines and CPAP machine?

We are leaving for Madeira by way of London this week and I called TAP to ask about something. Because they changed their carryon rules recently I asked about my husband's CPAP machine. The agent says that NOW you have to have a physician's letter besides telling them what kind, sizing and weight when you check in both for the airline and security.

We are an airline family and have traveled extensively all over the world since my husband got this machine many years ago and have never had this problem. Anyone else? Even the US airline that I work for we don't require all this BS?

I seriously doubt there will be an issue. My guess is that whoever you spoke to thought you were asking about your husband using the CPAP machine in flight, not carrying it as hand luggage.

No I kept clarifying that it was to be used at the hotel and not on the airplane and she put me on hold and did this whole bit about getting it through security.
Between booking this through the reservation agent this summer (because it wouldn't take my non "chip" Visa card and charging me $80)) and then having TAP have to redo the ticket three times as the agent kept putting in our info wrong-it it making me worry! I know that they outsource their agents on the phone but really....

It is allowed as a carry-on. It is not an issue with TSA and you know that it is not an issue at security in other airports.

Some airline reps are just don't understand what a CPAP is. FAs seem to understand. No TAP person is going to see it anyway. It is just another carry-on bag.
