Star Alliance Airpass Africa

I'm curious if anyone has recent experience using the Airpass and could give me a sense of whether it is worth pursuing cost-wise.

Yesterday I played around with a Johannesburg > Victoria Falls > Windhoek > Maputo > Joannesburg routing but could not get pricing without selecting flights (I am not that far along in my trip planning to try that yet).

I couldn't find any recent threads on the Airpass so thought I would post a query. (I did post a similar request in the Africa & Middle East forum and THOUGHT I had posted here but it never appeared...apologies if it double posts.)

Thanks for any input.

The problem with the air passes is that you pay for each segment, rather than for a through fare, so for example in your case, you're not flying JNB-VFA-WDH-MPM-JNB, 4 segments, you're flying JNB-VFA-JNB-WDH-JNB-MPM-JNB, 6 segments.

I just priced the above six segments in USD and it came to $1257, or around $210 per flight, so, say, Windhoek to Maputo costs $420 or so, whereas you can buy a one-way ticket from British Airways' Comair partner for $333.

With the Star Alliance planner, selecting flights doesn't require that you purchase the ticket, but it will give you a cost that's good for planning. Then use ITA to look at point-to-point one way fares and just do the comparo. I suspect in the end you might save a few bucks overall, but nothing barn-burning, by using the airpass.
