Snakes on planes
 

Yes, snakes. And lizards. Reptiles in general.

Can you bring them on planes? I'm not too worried about the snakes, but lizards don't take cold well - at least the ones I have. Anything below about 60 F will kill them.

Anyone know if airlines to Europe will allow live reptiles in the cabin? These are little guys, about 18", and 'well behaved' - they tend to stand still for many, many hours.

Assuming you're serious, I'm really curious about why you're taking your reptiles with you - are you relocating?

I was on a flight from Europe to Saudi Arabia a few years back (well, more than a few) and one of the passengers had a parrot with her in the cabin. It was hilarious, because the bird kept saying "Ronald, Ronald" until it was covered up.

Suggest you direct your question to the airline you plan to fly.

So you want to take a baby size alligator on good behaviour!!! - and book a seat for him I imagine!!

Does this baby alligator/lounge room lizard have a passport by any chance and the appropriate visa?!!

Now just say you get aboard with passport and visa, will you be happy to do the quickest of return trips when the destination customs/quarantine mob have a field day with you?

I'd be checking out the other end and then you'll find you might have to rig up a warm travelling hold box for Al if it becomes pertinent.

Heh. Yes, I, relocating. No I wouldn't take them on vacation. Unfortunately they don't talk, so in-flight entertainment is limited.

As for the seat and visa, they're allowed where I'm going. In fact, they're specifically allowed with no quarantine by customs regulations. So no visa needed. And I'm trying not to book seats for them (actually, they're a pair, a he and a she.)

They're small enough to stick under a jacket and they'd be happy just clinging to you for body warmth.

What about wildlife export permit?

You'll certainly need all the paperwork to flash for security people and then like with quarantine requirements when you ship domestic animals I'd reckon there'll still be vetinary clearances on health and I'd still eckon the only way they'll ever be carryon will be in some sort of a cage.

Oh, I can just picture it. The critters are tucked inside your jacket for warmth, you fall asleep on the long flight to Europe, and they decide to go exploring--can you imagine the commotion?

I wonder how old are those "littel guys" will they need car seats?

Most European airlines with the exception of British carriers allow small animals on board if they are in a box. There are special boxes, e.g. for cats or small dogs.

This resource migh get you started, but you're probably going to have to speak to a representative to find out how they treat pet lizards.

Please let us know your flight information (date, time, route) so that we can make sure not to be on the plane with you.

I agree with Cruiseryyc - please let us know so we can choose to not be on the plane with you and your critters. Just your thread title gives me the heebie-jeebies. (Please don't take personal offense! It's just MHO).

I would love to sit next to you. I love lizards and any other reptiles. As a young boy, I had lizards at home, in a terrarium. Now, I have a pond in my garden for my frogs, newts (they are cute!) and fish.

My kids and me are currently thinking about getting a pet rat (a cute grey one named "Drago" - he is currently in the sanctuary) and I am wondering if we can take him on a plane.

Rats like to run over your body under your sweater, hardly visible for other passengers (although they like to peep up out of your neckline from time to time). Maybe it can be a little difficult with a rat during security screening.
