Will be flying Singapore Air in Sept. from JFK to Frankfurt and would like to bring back some local German wine that you can't buy in the states. Has anyone had any experence with the baggage allowance, carry-on & check-in upon returning to the states. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks, Andrea

As far as I know (and there are far more knowledgeable people on this site) the liquor allowance is the same no matter which airline you travel or country you return from.. 1 litre per person.

Whatever you do don't be tempted to put the wine bottles in you checked baggage. Odds of breakage are VERY high.

Talk to the Airline and they will advise.

All I know is that with Air NZ which I have carried wine on they let us carry half a dozen bottles in a case in carry on. They specifically said do not check the wine.

If you want generous allowances you should try New Zealand. Here you can get well and truly toasted if you wish. The effective allowance is three litres of spirits per person and normally they let you through with a bottle or two of wine on top of that.

I believe technically you're allowed to bring a certain amount back into the US duty free, and anything over and above that you pay duty on. One liter per person rings a bell as the allowed amount. I don't think it's the airlines' input you need to consider. It's the US policy and a matter of customs regulations.

The offical US Customs policy on booze is 1 iter per person, BUT, if you look on their website, they do leave an open door. Basically,it's <i>&quot;as long as it is for individual consumption&quot;</i> you are allowed to bring in more. I'm somewhat of collector of unique bottles, so everywhere I go I try to find vodkas and rums that we can't get here at home. I always bring about 3-4 liters and not once did I get in trouble, and couple of times the customs officer knew about it.

I also agree with <b>ejcrowe</b>, it's not the airlines that care, it is the Customs rules that you have to worry about. As far as the airlines are concerned, you could have a suitcase full of wine, vodka, etc., as long as it's within weight limit.
