security question; carry on items
I'm flying on Southwest Airlines this Friday. Can anyone tell me if I bring eyeglass cleansing tissues in my purse, or do I have to pack them in my checked luggage? They're pre-moistened wipes - alcohol. They're individually wrapped.
Also, I was wondering if I have to remove my jewelry (mainly my earrings) when I pass through security? . I don't THINK they made me take them off the last time - it's been quite a while since I've flown. Any advice would be of help. |
I never take off jewelry when going through security. I wouldn't worry about the eyeglass tissues, I seriously doubt they will make an issue of that.
|
No problem with either. Carry on the tissues and leave on your earrings.
|
Thanks! :)

They are both OK. Unless the earrings are big enough to set of a metal detector, then you might have to remove them.
|
I never remove my jewelry and it is never a problem. I don't wear large pieces though.
I was behind a woman once who had a lot of jewelry on and she had to remove it - think large, multi-strand necklace, a few dozen bangle bracelets, etc. |
As a Southwest frequent flyer, I don't have to remove anything anymore.
|
Surfergirl, are you referring to TSA pre-check? If not then I don't see a connection between being a SW frequent flyer and having to remove things from your carry on luggage when going through security.

>> I don't see a connection between being a SW frequent flyer and having to remove things from your carry on luggage when going through security.<<
My boarding passes are marked 'TSA pre check' and/or 'Priority Boarding' on both Southwest and AA (presumably because I belong to both frequent flier programs - I haven't applied for Global Entry) and don't have to remove anything either (but did when flying JetBlue 3-ish months ago. |
You can apply for TSA Pre-check without having Global Entry. You fill out a form with your airline - people may do this in conjunction with their airline's frequent flyer program, but it isn't automatic because you are part of the FF program. Similarly, if you have Global Entry, you aren't automatically registered with TSA Pre-Check, you have to register with your airline.

I never filled out anything |
Its a mystery then.

I also have used TSA precheck and priority boarding. With TSA precheck you don't have to remove anything from your carry on. With priority boarding but no TSA precheck I still had to remove things from my carry on. The TSA precheck line is not for people with priority boarding, you must have TSA precheck on your boarding pass to use that line.

>>I never filled out anything<< I never did either. I've had pre-check on numerous flights out of Ohare and other airports since last fall. My airline got me signed up as a frequent flier and million miler. I signed up for Global Entry in late March and have used it twice on int'l returns into Ohare. Great time saver. |
the last time I went thru security I had to go thru 3 times taking practically everything off and it turned out there was metal in my head band and i WAS TSA APPROVED!
I took off my wedding ring once on a trip to Vegas and forgot to pick it up . realized it when I landed. called Lost and Found and was told to call back in 24 hours. Checked Lost and Found on return to airport but No one turned it in. It was a beautiful sapphire and diamond ring. IF I take any jewelry off I put it in my shoe and my shoes are always in the last bin as I know I will not walk away without shoes..... |
I read that some airlines qualify their travelers for TSA pre check. I flew out of PHL last weekend on Delta and was selected for the pre check lane. It actually was nice and my first time being a true carry on traveller. Everyone in line was not used to it. We all started taking our shoes off, taking liquids out, etc. The security guy kept repeating, you are in the special line. Do not remove anything. Put your shoes back on.

I am always have prechecked now on us Airways. I have never applied for anything it is automatic. I fly constantly every 4 months so I guess they know me by now. It is nice I like it. So much easier.
|
I knew I read somewhere that certain airlines give the pass to some people who are not signed up for precheck. Here is the link if anyone is interested http://www.tsa.gov/tsa-precheck/like...g-tsa-precheck.

Yes I was surprised to see it. I am a Grandma that visits my family and granddaughter faithfully every few months for 8 years. I guess by now they kind of "know me "

Back to the OP, I never take off any jewelry when going through airport screening, and no one has ever asked me to. The worst that happens is if I have long sleeves on, they ask me to pull them up so can see my watch and bracelets--once they see them and pat them lightly, I'm good. I don't have any kind of prescreening. Of course, I would if asked, because one has no choice, but I wait to be asked, and so far, it hasn't happened.
Last time we flew, I forgot to take my bag of liquids out of the outer zip of my suitcase going through screening. No one said a word. |
