I see flights from there to here for less than $500, one way fare, 3-4 weeks out. The main issue may not be one way fares but trying to find those fares with little advance purchase.
Same flights are $700-800 for flights 2 weeks from now.

I am trying the same thing, I will be in Italy in December and am thinking to use a cheap EU airline like Ryan air to fly to Amsterdam or London or someplace to get an Iceland Air flight, they seem to have flights around $400 at best from EU>NA

Aer Lingus looks like it has cheap one-way flights from London or Dublin. You could also try Air Transat one-way from London Gatwick to Canada and then (assuming that your final destination is the US) from Canada to the US.

Wonder what "ridculous" is? For all we know OP is looking for $250 or something.
If you want good assistance on airfares it helps to say (A) when, (B) where and (C) what your current "best" price is.
Airfares are just higher this year and generally on a trans-atlantic flights one way is much higer then a round trop.

Amsterdam to Miami next spring and we see Air Lingus/AA at $669, KLM/Air Berlin at $800 and then the next prices are almost double and higher. It makes you wonder -- when something looks too good to be true, it usually is.
