Sandwiches on the plane
 

Hi ! I am taking a flight from Paris to Fort Lauderdale in a few days and I'm flying with Norwegian Airlines.
Since it is low cost, the meals are not provided during the flight and they are really expensive (35€ per meal). I would like to bring my own sandwiches. Is it alowed ? I find every answer and their opposite on the internet. Some say that I can as long as I don't put Jelly/Nutella/mayo in it because it is considered a paste. Some say that even bread can be confiscated because it can be turned into paste (???!!!).
I know it is alowed on european flights but some forums say that US laws are stricter.

I' e never had a problem.

It is also better to choose low fare+ which includes a meal, seat res and checked baggage rather than go for the lowest fare then find you have to pay $$$ for the extras. Of course if you don't want the checked luggage or seat res then it doesn't make sense to take low fare+.

Can't you buy anything at CDG or whichever Paris airport you are flying from?

You can carry anything that they sell in the boarding terminal--after security, in other words--onto the plane except open alcohol.

Anything you carry through security has to comply with rules regarding liquids. I would not imagine that a sandwich would be a problem, but I've never brought one from home.

You can take a sandwich on the plane.

Last time I flew home from Paris I had a baguette, ham, salami, hard cheese and various cookies. No problem. We ate it all

I usually buy something in the airport after security. Never a problem, just make sure it's gone by the time you land because you can't bring it into the US.

Thank you all for your answers ! I think I'll juste try bringing my own sandwich and if they make me throw it away i'll buy one after security.

Just in case anyone else needs to know, I just called the airport (no idea why I didn't do that sooner). I'm alowed to bring a sandwich just as long as there is no paste (mayo, Nutella etc...) and the cheese needs to be 'hard' (emmental is fine, camembert is not).

Crazy régulations... No Nutella... And what if you check Nutella in a 50 ml packaging and then put it on your bread after security ?
(I'm Nutella addicted).

Whathello, I agree, that is pretty crazy. I have never heard about the "paste" prohibition, so it's good to know, thanks, Chichonne, for clarifying. I'm going to stick with buying food in the terminal, even though it's not cheap. No paste-related worries.

A few years ago coming back from Berlin the guy sitting next to me got a Whopper from Burger King after security. WITH ONIONS. The smell was awful. Whatever you bring onto the plane make sure it is not smelly!!!

Do you really think they are going to take apart your sandwich from home to check what kind of cheese you have or if it has mayo? Or was that a joke?

I have often brought sandwiches and they ALWAYS have mustard and mayo on them.

It wasn't a joke, I agree that this is weird but the guy I talked to from the airport asked me what ingrédients I wanted to put in my sandwich, typed them on the computer (I assume they have some sort of list of authorized ingrédients) and told me that my ham and emmental would be OK but not to put mayo.
I'm sceptic about how they will see the mayo also but this is what he said !
I find that lots of items are often forbidden but sometimes the agents at security don't seem to spot them. One I got on a plane in NYC with a bottle of cough syrup that I showed to the agent and was about to throw away whent he said to try to put it in my bag and that it may be overlooked. It was !

Instead of bringing a sammich from hom, bring hard boiled eggs. You'll make friends with EVERYONE.

Seriously though, you paid probably around $1000 for a plane ticket, just buy the friggin' $6 sandwich at one of the shops on the sterile side before you board.

Probably the list the agent was checking is what is considered a liquid/gel/paste that is not allowed through security except in the 3-1-1 liquids bag.

Recently saw a teenager having her jumbo jar of peanut butter removed from her carry-on at security check.
