San Francisco to Central Europe returning via Montreal
I understand that this may not be doable at a reasonable cost but I need to turn over all stones.
I was planning a trip to Europe (possibly flying into Munich) when my sister reminded me it was our parent's 60th anniversary and a family get together in the Montreal/Ottawa area is in order. Ideally we could stop over in Montreal for a few days on the way back but Air Canada (with flights from SFO to Montreal and Montreal to Munich) said that that it would cost $3500/ticket - way too much. Another possibility is to book separate tickets for SFO to Montreal and Montreal to Munich but that doesn't seem to save much money either.
Last year my wife did SFO to China with a 4 day stopover in Tokyo on the way back at no extra charge. Is such a thing possible in the western hemisphere?
thanks in advance,
Eric

What dates?
Check out multi-city (open jaw) options using a website like Kayak - eg SFO-MUC-YUL with a separate YUL-SFO flight
For example Lufthansa does SFO-MUC and MUC-YUL as direct flights
You may also find it helpful to fly into Frankfurt or Salzburg instead and take the train to Munich

"Reasonable price" is relative, I suppose.
Air Transat is a low-cost carrier operating from Canada. They have flights from Montreal to Rome, Vienna, Paris, and a few other spots in Europe. Plugging in some random dates in May/June, I got round-trip fares of $970/$1085 to Rome/Vienna, including taxes/fees. You can also get a round-trip SFO-YUL on Air Canada for about $640, including taxes/fees.

Don't know your dates, but I can see Lufthansa nonstop SFO-MUC and MUC-YUL for around $750 all in in March, around $1700 (ouch) in June, but $500 cheaper if you stop en route, e.g. Atlanta outbound, Paris returning.)
Then a one-way flight from YUL back to SFO will be around $360 in both March or June, so you're looking at ca. $2100 all in for high season, $880 earlier.

Thanks for the information. I did leave out some important details:
* we plan to travel in the summer
* there are 4 of us so even the best rates look pretty expensive
* my wife corrected me that it cost $200 to break her trip in Tokyo
