San Diego to Los Angeles Shuttle
 

We are staying in San Diego for a convention then fly from LAX to Maui. Is there a shuttle service that will go from SD Hotel to LAX? and if so, how much will that cost? Or am I better off to get up REAL early and fight the traffic and the rental car drop off in LA? (our flight is at 11 a.m. out of LAX)

A friend used Cloud 9, a sedan was $225 total for 2.Depending on which company you rent the car from,there may be no fee to drop it at LAX instead of SanDiego.Then again,your entire rate for the rental may be adjusted higher even though they may add no drop fee.Just have to ask.

why not take Amtrak up?

One doesn't take Amtrak to get from San Diego to LAX for the simple reason that Amtrak won't get you anywhere NEAR LAX. The nearest you will get is Union Station in downtown LA, at which point you will need to get to LAX in Westchester-- nearly 18 miles away.

The drive up from San Diego will take (optimistically) 2 1/2 hours, but if you leave between 6 and 6:30 you should be fine. The 405 has car pool lanes between the El Toro Y and LAX, which helps.

Why don't you just call Hertz or Avis and get a one-way rental? Drive up the night before, dump the car and get a good night's sleep in any nearby hotel (Holiday Inn was fine last time I used it) which has a shuttle.

Lighten up RJW. JD99 didn't seem to keen on driving up here and I was simply giving another option other than driving. No, Union Station is not near LAX, but Super Shuttle does service the station. If you have a car, it's your best bet, but one way rentals are quite expensive sometimes.

Apologies, Deborah-- didn't mean to snap in my original post. My only concern was that doing rail from SAN to LAX is a lot of hoop-jumping (Amtrak to Blue Line to Green Line to the LAX bus was what I was imagining). But if SuperShuttle (or another van service) has *scheduled* Union Station/LAX service, that would be acceptable.

And yes, one-way rental car dropoff is expensive. I'd still consider it first if I could find a deal.

RJW - totally agree with you and apology accepted. Just trying to give another option because the shuttle service someone listed was totally outrageous. If JD99 doesn't want to drive, at least there is the option of the train. I believe you can even take the green line to LAX.

Actually, Amtrak does offer connecting shuttle service to the LAX airport from Union Station (confusingly, also coded LAX). So one would take the Pacific Surfliner up from San Diego and then the shuttle. I don't know if the connections would work, but it's an alternative to driving.

Deborah: It looks like Amtrak has it covered! Who knew...?

By the way, the Green Line actually doesn't stop at LAX-- it bypasses the airport and ends in El Segundo. At Aviation and Imperial Highway, one gets off the train and waits for an LAX shuttle, which stops at each terminal on the loop.

Yes, I knew you had to take the shuttle from the green line to LAX, but didn't know about the Amtrak connection. Great to know for the future. Thanks NoFlyZone.

Thanks all. Not too keen on the train connections with a 4-year old, so I guess I'll be driving after all. Was just wondering if Supershuttle or some other company did the trip for not too much dough.

Taking a train with a child is, well, it's child's play. Easy on and off, clean. And there are staff members there to help. There's a little lounge with juices and other foods and the rest rooms are clean. And the Pacific Surflines are some of the newest vehicles around (I took it myself last May). Try it, you will like it.
