rkkwan quoted in the newspaper

It's an article in the Jan 29, 2008 New Jersey Star-Ledger. [Okay, okay, it's not the New York Times.] About Continental's Polar Routes from EWR to China.

Nice to see -- especially since I've booked my son on that flight next summer. I had to used 120K OnePass to do it.

I recall the days before the easing of USSR airspace and long haul planes when ANC had a huge, separate international terminal with, I believe, one of the nation's busiest duty free shops. All the Europe to Asia flights would stop there. One a flight from ANC to AMS on KLM, they had "polar suits" under the seats.

repete - Make sure you check back later on once in a while to see if they have standard awards open up, either coach or BusinessFirst.

I was booked using 120K EasyPass award for last Christmas' trip, but last minute I saw a standard BF award on the flight next day. I immediately called, paid the redeposit and "rush" fees and got myself in BF for the same amount of miles.

Rkkwan, nice job. I took a flight a few years back Seoul to Detroit that took a northern route.

I do remember my mom taking flights out of ANC going to Tokyo to visit family.

Got me to thinking...are there any South Pole routes? Any that would make sense?

rkkwan Feb 5th, 2008 04:58 PM

South America to Australia may cut through Antartica. In particular, routes like EZE-PER or GRU-ADL or SCL-PER can fly very close to the South Pole.

But there's no such commerical route right now. There's EZE-AKL, SCL-AKL, JNB-SYD, etc; but none that close to the South Pole.

There are also few diversion airports, so no ETOPS operation either.

Nice to see a Fodorite in the press. I'm looking forward to the polar route when we take Thai Airways this Christmas NYC-BKK.

rkkwan Feb 6th, 2008 04:21 AM

TG's JFK-BKK doesn't use one of the Polar Routes most of the time. It flies over the northern Atlantic, Scandanavia, Russia and so on.

The return trip usually flies over northern Pacific, so not Polar either.
