Question regarding Southwest free flights

My husband and I took advantage of the current SWA credit card promotion - you get the card (we each got one), pay the $59 annual fee, use the card once, and then you earn a free RT ticket, good for one year. We got the ticket credits last week by mail.

We're thinking of using our tickets for a vacation in the southeast next September, but are also aware that the weather can be unpredictable at that time - hurricanes are what we're concerned about.

Does anyone know if you cancel a trip on the free tickets, can you use them later? For a different destination?

What about trip insurance? Can you insure "free' tickets for the published value?

If there is a FEE to change the free tickets, then you should be able to get insurance to cover it. But there has to be a loss before insurance will pay. If the tickets were FREE there is no loss.

As far as your other questions, I think it would be best to contact Southwest directly.

As noted, no loss no pay. But most travel insurances will pay for change/cancel/redeposit fees (those associated with free tickets) as well as travel delays, baggage loss, other losses associated with air problems (as specified in the particular policies, of course).

So when I pull insurance for certain international trips I always include the free tickets (and taxes paid) in the gross trip estimate when determining the premium.
