Question about Empower laptop power adapter
 

I'll be flying UA in business and they have "empower" power ports at each seat.
I have an Empower adapter I bought 10 years ago for a Toshiba Libretto laptop. I now have a newer (4 years old) Toshiba Portege laptop.

I'm wondering if I can use this adapter with the newer laptop?
It says on the adapter that it was made to work with older versions of my Portege. But it also says "use with incorrect cable may result in serious computer damage".

Is there any way I can figure this out without running the risk of frying my computer? The manufacturer's website does not exist any more so I can't check there.

Check the output voltage and current of the new and old power supplies. If they match, and the plug is the same then you are good to go.

Some laptop makers are better than others at keeping power supplies the same from year to year. Thinkpads were all the same for many years, an only about 2yrs ago changed to a new style.

The Empower adapter says this:
Input: 12-16VDC 6.5A
Output: 5-24 VDC 50W Max

The power pack on my laptop says this:
Input: 100-240V~1.1A-0.6A 50-60Hz
Output: 15V 3A

Unfortunately, I'm not really sure how to decipher this. Because my laptop output is 15 and in the range of 5-24 does that mean I'm good to go?

Does the Empower have a switch on it to adjust the voltage? Most of the "universals" I've seen do have some sort of switch you can set to adjust the voltage. I've never seen one that does it automatically.

You definitely want the adapter to be outputting 15 volts, NOT higher!!!

But I just thought to look at the power pack on my old laptop (for which I bought the adaptor) and it has:
Input: 100V 61VA 50-60Hz
Output: 15V 2A

So the old laptop is similar, though not identical to the new one.

I don't know. I'm now having visions of the thing bursting into flames while I'm in the air. Not sure I want to risk it. ;-)
