Question about dropping ORD-YYZ leg of HNL-ORD-YYZ
 

Good morning all,

I have flown dropped-leg before, but had a question on an itinerary that is significantly less expensive. I am looking at a United HNL-ORD-YYZ, with a plane change in ORD, but wanting to drop that last US to Toronto leg, as I live in Chicago. Would there be any issues from a customs perspective? Or do I board the flight in HNL normally, deplane in Chicago and go on about my day? Or would there be a passport check when I attempt to board in HNL? No experience in cross border dropped leg travel. Thank you in advance!!!

Will your luggage not be checked through?

Thanks for the reply! I will not be checking luggage. My only concern is that the leg I'm dropping would be US to Canada, and that I would be asked for a passport at HNL prior to boarding the flight to Chicago. thanks!!!

In HNL, you're boarding a flight from one state to another. Do you need a passport to fly from Las Vegas to New York or Houston to Seattle?

Actually - yes because the OP is booking from HNL > YYZ that just happens to connect through ORD. So the airline WILL definitely check your documents (i.e. passport) in HNL before issuing the boarding passes.

(Every time I fly out of the States I start w/ a domestic leg because there are no international flights from my home airport -- and EVERY SINGLE TIME they check my passport)

If you are flying one way with carry on only and do not make a habit of this with United you should be fine. Yes, you will need to show your passport in HNL. Makes no difference. What you are doing is a violation of fare rules but not a crime.

From the OP I had assumed you don't have a passport since you asked about a passport check specifically. If you do have a passport with you, then sure you could get away with that.

But if you don't have one, then you can't book that itinerary - in fact you'll need to enter you passport # on the airline's booking form.
