Purchasing third coach seat for two passengers on international flight

Many years ago we were able to purchase an extra seat on a very long series of flights to
Singapore . I have read some postings on the internet about this ,and would like to know if anyone has recently purchased and extra coach seat when traveling overseas?
I will be traveling on a nonstop flight to Ireland ,and since business class is sold out on our flight, would like to see if the the airlines allows purchasing a middle seat between my husband and me for the flight. I have checked the airlines website and could not find any information on this subject. The airlines is American. I also checked this forum site and found no postings . Thank you for any recent experience on this subject you are sharing.

You may get more responses on the Air Travel board. I have seen some discussion of this WRT overweight people booking a second seat, but not your idea. Have you checked the seat map to see whether there are three seat combos rather than 2-4-2? Have you checked whether there are premium economy seats avaiable?

You really need to talk to AA about this, as you would need to provide identifying info for the missing third person....

Sorry - thought this was the Travel Tips board.

Thanks for your input thursdaysd. I posted this comment under the Air Travel forum category. No there is no premium economy offered on this flight. Yes there are 3 seats across and yes I will be calling AA. I was trying to inform myself before calling AA to see if anyone on this forum purchased 3 tickets for two people.

Personally, as a flight attendant with a major US airline, I would not purchase a third seat for such a short flight?I would save your money for a longer flight.
For my family, we just always purchase the aisle seats together so we have some space but are close to each other to chat or swap something out.

Airlines overbook so your 3rd seat will be occupied by someone

Ain't that the truth!

Instead of booking three seats just select aisle seats across from each other (and pray to god they don't change equipment on you)

You could buy the 2nd seat (actually the 3rd) and say you are a "passenger of size." I believe you'd have to call though.

Aisle seats across from each other are great for people who like aisle seats.
I only like the window, so DH (who prefers the aisle) books the aisle and I book the window.
We're not trying to put one over on anyone and get all 3 seats, just selecting the seats we each prefer.

My friend and I were considering doing this Boston-Iceland. Instead, we booked 2 aisle seats. But I admit I am trying to play the game. Plane is 3-5-3 and my aisle seat is in the 5 center group and am hoping that my row is unfilled.

We booked aisle and window in same row on our last trip together and the middle seat was unoccupied 1/2 the time.

I got lucky on a recent 7 hour red eye flight PER-HKG by booking hubby and I in the middle section toward the back of the plane where during on line check in there were empty seats in front, beside, and behind. They didn’t fill up at boarding so we had the whole 4 seats and I could stretch out. I saw an elderly couple eyeing them before takeoff, but I had an onward flight of 15 hours to come so I figure I was justified. (I’m not so young myself) I’ve had that strategy backfire as well, when a half empty section at check in turned out to be almost at capacity upon boarding and we we stuck in less than desirable seats.

Better call airlines customer phone number. They will able to give you better information.
