Please help - what can I carry on?
Dear Fodorites:

In 2 weeks, we will be flying for the first time since 9/11 and are wondering about what security will allow to be carried on. If it makes a difference, we will departing from Dulles, connecting through Houston Intercontinental, with final destination Cancun, with return in reverse on Continental Airlines.

In the past, we've carried on the following in standard-size carry-on bags on both domestic and international flights. Anyone have recent good or bad experience carrying on these items, especially at the above airports?

- glass containers and bottles (perfume, liquor)
- ceramics (souvenir pottery, plates, vases, etc..
- scuba masks (risky to check-in since mask is prescription and not easily replaced at destination if luggage is lost).
- the film situation - we understand that the FAA regulations state that security personnel are required to hand-inspect film and cameras if requested to do so, but this would only be in the US? Anyone have have experience with the Cancun airport?

Thank you so much for your help.

maggie

You are probably fine with the items you mentioned in a carryon. They have been taking away things like nail-clippers and sewing needles. I definately would not pack a dive knife in my carry-on with my mask. (Bottles aren't an issue as we took several bottles on wine on board coming back from California.

Where they have gotten more strict is on the number of carry-ons. They probably are more serious about limiting you to one bag plus a purse/briefcase.

In terms of time through security, it will definately take more time. You also might want to wear shoes that slip on and off easily in case you are pulled aside for random screening.

Hi, suggest you review the following for the skinny right from the source:

http://www.tsa.gov/workingwithtsa/travel.htm

M&M, before going on vacation in October I e-mailed the airline with specific questions about my carry-on and got a personalized answer. Try, it may help you.

M&M, we are also flying for the first time since 9/11 later this month. I have read up on different websites on what is allowable and what is not. On one list, it noted that aersols are not allowed. My question to fellow travellers, can shaving cream and hair spray be packed in regular luggage (not carryon) or is this not allowed now?

Thanks for your reply.

Mary, I put spray deodorant in checked luggage - looks like hairspray in
x-ray, no problem.
