Opinion

I was on a flight recently from Houston to New York and was suffering from bad gas. I had dined with clients the previous night and the beans didn't sit well with me. So here I am in first class passing gas as little as possible, but I couldn't help it. I was afraid the gentleman next to me would say something or move, there were a lot of open seats in first class.

Maybe it didn't bother him, although the smell was no joke, but I wonder, at what point does someone being subjected to bad gas say something or get a flight attendant involved? What would you do in my place?

Get a good cork.

LOL

But that may be hazardous don't you think? Hint: projectile at high speed.

This is precisely the sort of topic that registration should make it easier to short-circuit, but until Fodors decides this is too sophomoric to continue, I will take the opportunity to chastise the sniggerers about the entire issue, based on the manners I was taught.

Problems like chibcha's are not something they are gigglingly helpless to avoid. Chibcha knew what happens when he eats beans and he knew he had a flight the next day. Miss Manners may have been too genteel to put it in any of her books, but it is the height of bad manners to put your pleasure in eating such "dangerous" foods above what you know will be an unpleasant experience for those around you in the future.

The subject may be funny, but the choice is a real one. Chibcha, when people do what you did, they are being very very thoughtless. What would I have done? I would have skipped the beans (and beer and peanuts and curried cabbage and anything else you know will be a problem) in the first place!

Go to the lav and have a bowel movement. you are potty trained, right?

soccer,

I was very hesitant to bring introduce the topic, but it wasn't meant to be childish. I was afraid people would be rubbed the wrong way. I think many times this is an issue on flights.

If you read my post, I didn't inquire about strategies on how to avoid this predicament. I'm asking how one handles the situation in which someone with gastric problems is making things uncomfortable.

Who's you're favorite club, BTW? Are you watching US-Argentina this weekend?

Chibcha, your post was a bit confused, then, because you are asking what your seatmate could possibly do or say and then you ask what we would do in your situation. Two different problems (and a possible pun in the last line).

Your seatmate had the choice of moving, using defensive techniques (aftershave or cologne on one's own upper lip is helpful, my sister has a mint/lavender "mood" lotion of some sort that works wonders), or being stoic.

You had the choice of moving, yourself, or going into the loo as often as possible to contain the damage. But Miss Manners would say there are certain circumstances under which everyone involved should pretend nothing happened and say nothing (e.g., going out to get the paper in a bathroom -- you are invisible then), and this may be one of them.

(Yes, US-Argentina, but watch Brit., Ital., Spanish, Fr. teams -- often better games unless you're talking about women's teams.)

Oh, dear, what a slip of the tongue! "Going out to get the newspaper in a bathROBE." Sorry!

Perhaps this topic is too edgy and maybe I didn't express myself adequately. I though people would have similar experiences they'd like to share.

I support MLS but do watch European football for greater quality until MLS catches up. I think the US is in for a defeat on Sat. due to lack of match fitness.
