Okay to exit secure area of airport during layover?

When one has a layover of several hours between connecting flights, will Security permit us to leave an airport's secure area to walk around or meet local friends who are not flying? (Obviously, we would have to go through Security again.) I'm specifically interested in Vancouver International (YVR). Thank you.

Sure, as long as you have your boarding pass for the next flight. The only time it would be a problem would be if you're not allowed in the country where you're changing planes, but that shouldn't be the case with Canada.

I've done it more than once and I never had a problem. One time I did it to have a mini-GTG with a Fodorite during my layover in Minneapolis.
