Not Re-checking luggage at Port of Entry

Hi,

I have a SYD-LAX-DEN flight coming up on UAL. I've got family in LA that I'd like to give one of my check-in luggages to. (I figure I can do this after customs and before security). I'd like to know if I'd encounter any problems with the airline by not re-checking my suitcase. Thanks!

Considering the fact that each piece of luggage is tagged and is being tracked by a computer I am wondering what would happen if it does not "show up" for loading onto your LAX-Denver segment. The tag should be "read" at that point either by a hand-held or automatic device so the airline "knows" it got onto the plane.

Of course, luggage gets lots all the time and if you don't make any claim at the destination perhaps they'll simply not care.

Not a problem. But you can also just short-check that one piece to LAX only.

Since all bags go onto the same baggage claim & get walked out through customs regardless of whether LAX is the final destination or not nobody will care if the bag stays in LA or not. If you want, you tear off the luggage tag when you lift if from baggage claim. Then there will be no DEN code for anybody to see even if they cared.

The OP isn't caring about people seeing the tag. He/she cares about the airline having a record about there should be a suitcase going to DEN but wasn't rechecked and loaded onto the flight.

I've done exactly this, but for different reasons. No one cared. I didn't want to have to deal with my bag on an international flight to the U.S. so I checked it. When I arrived at my port of entry, I retrieved my bag, went through customs, and carried the bag onto my connecting domestic flight. I had a bus shuttle to catch at my final destination and I didn't want to have to wait there at baggage claim. It was fine.

Now, if you yourself don't show up for your connecting flight, that will raise eyebrows, but the bag, not a problem.

It may be important to tear that tag off. I got caught once (in AUA) because I did not tear it off and the exit dragon would not let me exit without putting it on the recheck belt.

(that happened about 18 months ago, not a long time as I implied)
