Northwest is no more

It happened. The airline that took me from the US to Hong Kong as a baby is officially gone. Starting 1/31/10, all flights will be DL. And nwa.com is now redirected to delta.com.

Last three NW flights are enroute to AMS right now. Once the last one landed in the morning of 1/31/10, there won't be any more flights with NW numbers.

Having my own business now as opposed to a corporate road warrior less than 2 years ago, I'm out of the loop. I flew NWA quite a bit, DL much more so. What are the DL hubs now? I can't imagine ATL, CVG, SLC, JFK, MSP, DTW, MEM all being utlized as primary or secondary hubs. I understand that business models make these changes necessary to survive, but it's still sad to see a legacy carrier's entity go away.

Were they once called Northwest Orient? I flew to Tampa once time, years ago, on an L1011, on NW Orient.

What are the DL hubs now?

The only hub that has seen dramatic decreases has been CVG. The others have remained relatively static, though DTW has seen some new Asian routes announced and JFK has seen the odd route or two added. All in all, I think most of the hubs (aside from CVG) are relatively safe.

simpsonc510 - They once marketed themselves as Northwest Orient. That's how I remember their planes in Hong Kong in the 70's. But officially, they were always just Northwest.

I think that several hubs are in danger.....

CVG is on the "critical" list, but others will follow.

I used to visit Cincinnati every two weeks and that was an expensive flight. If the DL hold on this market eases, hopefully airfare will drop for those living in that region.

Joins a long list of US legacy airlines that are no more.

Braniff
Eastern Airlines
National Airlines
Ozark Airlines
Pan American
Piedmont
TWA

as well as these others that have come and gone
American West
ATA
People Express

Who's next?

Delta, AA, UAL, Southwest, and CO all seem to have staying power & enduring brands.

My bet is USAir will be the next brand to disappear.

I cannot say I am sorry. They royally messed up my trip to India a few years ago. I paid extra for a flight from Boston to Bangalore via Amsterdam to avoid having to pass through Mumbai. They called me a week before telling me they were adding a stop through Mumbai, which sucked but wasn't the end of the world. What was egregious, however, is they didn't pay Jet Airways for my flight from Mumbai to Bangalore - I had to pay out of my own pocket and they took three bleeping months for them to reimburse me and they did not give me ANYTHING for my trouble. Never again, I said, and I meant it - I am glad they went out of business.

How does it affect their Europe hubs? NWA seemed to have lots of flights through/to AMS, but I'm not seeing so many anymore. I can't imagine Delta wants to lose any spots overseas.

rkkwan Feb 1st, 2010 08:15 PM

There's no change in their European operation. Just change all NW name to DL. DL already has the joint-venture with AF/KL on the TATL routes.

I will miss them. We have flown on NWA many, many times over the years and I really don't have many complaints. I am anxious to see if Delta makes lots of changes that make it a less desirable airline for us to use. Hope not as they fly to a lot of places we fly to for business and pleasure.

tom_mn Feb 3rd, 2010 07:20 PM

As an MSP local, I will greatly miss NWA.com. Delta.com is much less easy to use and navigate.

Cali Feb 3rd, 2010 08:36 PM

I also noticed that tom_mn. I am hoping they will go to the NWA website format rather than the one they have now.

NoFlyZone Feb 4th, 2010 05:34 AM

Delta originally wanted to use nwa.com as their main customer interface. However, after a few months of going with that plan they determined that it was not sufficiently compatible with all of the internal systems used to run the airline (which they determined were superior to the NWA systems) and would take too much effort and cost. So they somewhat reluctantly went with delta.com for the public website.

taitai Feb 5th, 2010 05:08 AM

I hate Delta.com. I guess as an MSP person, I am so used to NWA.com. They still have not updated the website. We are flying NW/Delta to Hong Kong next month and I can't find any info on flying to Asia on the site. It is as if it does not exist. Europe, yes. South America, yes. Africa, yes. Just no Asia.

I guess I need to get used to it.

Cali Feb 5th, 2010 10:44 PM

I agree with you taitai, I also hate the new Delta website. It just isn't half as customer friendly as the NWA site was. I hope they can do something with their site to add some of the NWA ease of use.
