Non Refundable Tickets
Bought a couple of non-refundable tickets for a May trip to Australia--due to business considerations I may have to cancel. Have $4600 on the line with United---I understand that there are expenses associated with cancelling, but looking for a way to mimize the pain---anyone know of an authorative site for figuring the best way to handle the issue? United makes it difficult to find the best answer.

Non-refundable doesn't mean you lose it all if you cancel your trip. Can you make trip at another time?
If so you'll only be charged a "change fee" plus possible fare increase if there is a difference in the cost between what you already paid and the fares for your new dates of travel. So, you can cancel the tickets you have and get credit (but no refund) toward future travel but there will be some restrictions. |
Will likely not be able to make the Australia trip, but will travel in the US.

You don't have to go to the same destination if you cancel your original itinerary just book your travel through the same airline and within a pre-set time period (usually a year).

Non refundable normally means non refundable ie if you cancel you do not get a refund at all except for some of the airport taxes. You might be able to change for a fee which might mean a change fee plus additional for any fare increase. You need to check the fare rules pertaining to your booking to see if you can change to a different routing as mostly changes mean changes to your existing routing. The authorative site for checking the rules is the one you booked on where the rules are visible before purchase.

**You need to check the fare rules pertaining to your booking to see if you can change to a different routing as mostly changes mean NO changes to your existing routing.**

This is a time I'd get on the phone with the airlines.

I know on Delta I had to use a cancelled international ticket for international travel. I could change the routing.
You might try researching on the United Forum on flyertalk.com |
