No more 500mi minimum credit on US

So far 2008, we have UA starting to charge $25 for 2nd piece of luggage. Now, US will eliminate 500-mi minimum mileage credit. These will affect huge amount of their customers as many of their flights are short-haul.

This is got to be the worst business decision of the decade.

A very big number of USAirways high yielding customers are flying in little puddle jumpers using their shuttle service all over the east coast. These are the people that will be the most effected by this "improvement".

Many of their FFers fly 1-2x a week on a 200-300 mile routes, paying $300+ per r/t on a plane that has no perks and in many cases no on board service and now, very few miles.

Brilliant!

During the US/HP merger, the Tempe management kept telling investors that they're transforming into a low cost carrier.

Well, my theory is that they see the future of the US aviation universe post-DL/NW and UA/CO mergers and understand that they don't have a chance at their current business model or within *A.

So, they're pro-actively repositioning themselves elsewhere in the marketplace. Well, they can't compete with B6, FL, WN, VX either, I guess, which all still retain decent FF programs. <b>So</b>, they've decided they want to be the king among Skybus and Spirit, and basically run a Ryanair model with no frills and no perks. In fact, they might just as well shut down DM.

That's my theory... :)

That could very well be but if they want to be USRyan then they should drop their puddle jumper fares to $9-19-29 each way.

It really makes you wish you could be a fly on the wall in the meetings where the bean-counters and the corporate bozos come up with this dreck.

I love the header paragraph in the cod liver oil message:

- Fewer outstanding DM miles to compete with you for for award seats

- Emptier planes

The minimum used to be 750 miles on USAir until not very long ago.

United is doing away with the 500-mile minimum credit for redeemable miles (RDMs) and elite qualifying miles (EQMs).

There was a time when the minimum RDM credit was 500 but the EQMs were actual miles flown. I don't remember if Mileage Plus started out with actual miles for RDM credit or with the 500-mile minimum.

Hate to see FF mile values/earning decreases. This is not as bad on UA flyers as it is on US.
