No mileage expiration on Delta

I don't know how long it will last. I have a decent number of miles with Delta but it has been impossible to use them.

Yea, this is great news. Not sure why they would do this but hopefully other airlines follow suit. Will they instead try to "inflate" the miles away?

esm Feb 15th, 2011 10:45 AM

Good question k. Most of the time I don't see a domestic roundtrip for less than 60K.

Some people do refer to Delta's Sky Miles program as "Sky Pesos," given how difficult it's become to use the miles for anything except awards with highest mileage requirements.

Well last month I got a pair of J tickets in October to BOM at the lowest level. Took a couple of weeks of monitoring daily but not all that difficult to accomplish.

You can also get hotels with them

Recently got several nites at the Bauer

on the Grand Canal in Venice

reg $500/nt at a great price with them.

So they can also be used for hotels and rental cars

Do this a lot with all my FF programs save a tonne.

The key for me is to use them B4 you lose them.

AA has me po'd right now offering to sell me back

my expired miles I screwed up by not using for $50/5000 miles

How generous of them to take them away then sell them back.

Just picked up 40000 AA miles on their new CC instead.

I'm with American's AAdvantage program, so I have no personal experience with Delta. My concern if I were a Delta flier would be that here's a program already notoriously difficult for redeeming low-level mileage awards. (Or so people say.) Now there are going to be a lot more miles floating around out there competing with mine to search for those limited awards.

mrwunrfl Feb 28th, 2011 05:35 PM

That is a very good point, Jeff. I enjoyed the sarcasm, NoFlyZone.

Once upon a time getting an award flight was like buying a full fare ticket.

shepps Feb 28th, 2011 06:55 PM

I just booked a reward ticket rt from SFO to Saigon on United, where there was lots of availability for 65K miles. On Delta, the lowest award level is 80K, and there was nothing at that level, nor at 130K, on the dates I wanted. I realize that's just one instance, but it really didn't endear me to SkyMiles.

One has to wonder why Delta would rather fly the plane empty.

Jeff_Costa_Rica Mar 6th, 2011 02:51 PM

But are they flying planes empty because of this? If they're selling seats for money rather than FF miles, then the strategy is working for them.
