No lunch in coach?

I just found out that the AW flights from Atl to Pheonix and back serve no food! I will be traveling with young children (5 and 7). Any suggestions for a carry on lunch?

First of all, it should be food your kids are familiar with and will eat. Second, nothing hot, smelly or spilly (e.g., soup). Juice boxes, sandwiches, easy fruit (grapes, bananas), granola bars. Stay away from really sugary stuff, and things that make a lot of mess or crumbs. To keep the sandwiches cold put one of the juice boxes in the freezer the night before. Take plenty of hand-wipes (or just damp paper towels in a baggie) for cleanup before and after. I strongly recommend that you wipe off the tray tables as soon as you sit down -- those things are NEVER cleaned!

Your kids will probably like the sandwiches to pack for them better than anything the airline would have served anyway.

Thank you for your suggestions. Rose, You're right they would probably prefer food from home that they are familiar with. Jen, I'ts good that you mentioned the hand wipes especially. I'm sure I would have forgotten!

My kids, even as they are now older, still love to snack on those little boxes of cereal on planes. Bring snacks, not just a meal. For some reason, probably boredom, one of my kids could consume a week's worth of calories on any flight she is on.

The hard part is the return trip - since you don't have access to your home kitchen or grocery store. But stash away a few non-perishable snacks for the return trip and buy whatever else you need.

Even when the airlines served food, we always brought food at least for the kids. No way would they eat the mystery meals the airlines provided.
