It is positively ridiculous that the FA could not search this woman's purse - if you saw a weapon in her purse, would the FA refuse to do a search - or alert the Captain?
Not only was this situation unpleasant (to say the least), but it was dangerous as well. We all know that drinking impairs judgement. This woman would be a tremendous hinderance in the case of an emergency.
The FA is there for the welfare & security of ALL the passengers. The drunk should have been bounced immediately!
What a nightmare...hope UA makes it right.

I wouldn't overestimate the customer service response process at United. I filed a complaint last year over what I considered to be a fairly egregious issue (failing to provide the unaccompanied minor service that I paid for, and expected). I think it was 5-6 weeks before I received a reply, which was barely more than a form letter.
