MIA-CDG Feb.'10: AF or AA ? Is there another nonstop option ?
This is the same basic dilemma that prompted my first-ever Fodor's post 7/06, only that time we were leaving out of BOS. Our home base may have changed, but, sad to say, we still have to travel coach.
Hoping to get some opinions from Fodorites who know the MIA-CDG route and the aircraft. We loved AF for our trip from BOS three yrs. ago. (340). But their use of the old 747 on this route gives me pause (vs. 763 on AA)
Both flights under consideration (appear to) have plenty of seats left. I've done the seatguru thing to check out IFE options, etc, and they're pretty lame on both. Seat pitch and width give a very slight edge to AF.
Schedules/fares are similar as well, so I'm just fishing for a few recommendations of one over the other. OR---is there another nonstop option that we haven't considered ?
Thanks for any comments or experiences you'd care to share.

I've done the route on Air France 3 times in the last year.
See if you can get the "upper deck". It's nice ..seat back t.v.'s and it's all 3-3-3 seating. 24 hours before departure you can get seats (if available) for 50 euro extra.
I like Air France (even downstairs).
The flight attendants have always been so nice to me and the
drinks are free.

poochie--thanks so much for your comments. I really envy your making the trip so frequently !
Like you, we enjoy the AF service, friendliness, etc. The French ambience onboard really gives the impression of starting the vacation that much sooner. We cracked up over the handout of mini-baguettes when we were barely airborne !
I had not realized the upgrade to upper deck was that reasonable....it sounds like a definite improvement in terms of IFE and seating config. We'll be sure inquire about that when booking. My hubby is 6'8"---an issue on any flight---but I wonder if the upperdeck ceiling is same height as the one below ?
Thanks again for taking time to respond !

lifes2short,
I can't say about the ceiling height, but I don't remember it feeling cramped-low at all.
Check-in on line 24 hours before your flight and that's when you will see if the upper deck seats are available.

The decision has been made---a surprising one, for me. I really was leaning towards AF. All of a sudden, AA has a sale putting their fare lower by $100 pp. We booked it, feeling very fortunate to be paying less out of MIA than we paid in '06 from BOS.
poochie, thanks again for your input.
