Maxjet adds JFK/LAS/LAX flights, cut IAD

JFK - from 7 to 10x weekly

I know there's significannt interest in Maxjet's service to STN on Fodors, so this is a heads up.

And they didn't win the 2009 authority for LAX-SEA-PEK. So, won't see all-business class flights between US and China for a while

Why did MaxJet stop serving Washington/IAD? Is it worth flying to JFK and connecting to go to London?

Why? Airlines cut routes usually because 1) they lose money; 2) they do not make as much money as other routes.

Is it worth flying to JFK to connect? Well, that just depends on your preference. Your money, your time.

If you're going from Washington to London and just want something nicer than regular coach, you may want to consider premium economy on BA or Virgin.

though you may want to take a mental note that premium economy IS economy after all. You'll get 2-3-2 seat configuration with leg/foot rests, but the seats won't decline that much and you'll get ordinary economy class meals.

The meal service on VS premium economy is not the same as economy and the seats do recline, depending on aircraft type.

Premium Economy on BA and VS definitely won't be as nice as Maxjet. No question. But question is whether it's worth the trouble with a connection and probably higher cost after you add the connecting flight.

Thanks for the great info. We are rethinking the whole thing now and may just go to Paris, but there seem to be a lot more flight choices to London. Someone suggested Zoom, but to get to Paris, we'd have to fly through Montreal first. Are there other choices to Paris?

Zoom is a budget airline. I don't see why you want to fly with them.

The all-business class airline to Paris is L'Avion. They fly non-stop from Newark to Paris-Orly. Fares are often comparable to Maxjet.

You just need to go up to Newark to take that flight.

Zoom does have an enhanced class (I forget its precise name) that is probably not equivalent to the business-class airlines, but it is some steps above &quot;regular&quot; economy.

It's a shame, but clearly not all 3 new premium players in the London-USA were going to survive - it will be interesting to see if any of them make it in the longer run. Was actually expecting Eos to go first though.

Apparently silverjet is trying to go for the kill. They announced yesterday that they will honor Maxjet NYC-London tickets for 12/7 and 12/8, if any Maxjet flyers worry about their carrier!

Wow, bold move. Though I wonder how many people actually got the message in time to change.

Well, the fact is that these carriers need to break even with probably a $4,000 roundtrip fare and and 60% load factor. At their current fares, they will lose money even if they put passengers in the cargo hold. And they're filling up only 50-60% of the seats for them.

eos have been getting new cash from the stock market, and have enough contracts to add new planes and new flights. But that's not going to make them any money in the long run.

With the fuel prices like they're now, they're bleeding cash even faster. Yes, I agree. All will be gone soon.

Thanks for this thread, rkkwan. A coworker was telling me about his decision to go with using Maxjet to London. He was online, so we came to fodors and found this thread. Then we read the Maxjet announcement of December 7 that you had linked. Better informed, he is reconsidering his decision.

Silverjet is actually expanding. They're getting a lot of repeat customers, myself included. They're adding two new long range aircraft to their fleet so they can fly from London to LA, Shanghai and Johannesburg.
