Lufthansa Seat Selection

When looking at Lufthansa reservations, you are offered seat selection. (Denver to Istanbul). There's hefty charge. If you do NOT go for seat selection, are you offered a seat selection at a later time? No seat selection at all? Would you just be placed anywhere at the time of check-in? Thanks for any/all information!

You can select the seats free of charge during check-in - 23hrs prior to departure if you can do online or mobile check-in for your flight(s).

There may be a seat selection charge due to the class letter assigned to your ticket. Call Lufthansa and see if you can get a seat selection without a charge.. tell them that you cant do the seat selection online at no cost and see if they can help

otherwise you are limited to seat selection less than a day before departure.

If you have booked your flight with Lufthansa through a travel agency, ask the agency to help you out with seat selection in advance. If you booked the flight directly with Lufthansa Airlines, it will be wise to call the airline and request for seat selection. Or, you can select a seat for you on Lufthansa's website if you have prior experience.

Why do you need "prior experience" in selecting seats from a seat map?

Additionally, going thru a travel agent or going direct to the airline, whichever was the original booking method, doesn't get away from the fact that selecting seats more than 23 hours before departure incurs a fee.

Maxima, seat assignment fees are not something for negotiation, you can't call LH and start asking for a free seat assignment when you are supposed to pay for it, esp for a reservation which is likely to be the cheapest of the cheap tickets. It's not like buying something at a souk, you can't haggle the price down.

I understand that Lufthansa is trying to charge additional fee for reserving your seats ahead of time (although it's annoying). What I fail to understand however is WHY travel companies like Orbitz, Expedia, etc. still prompt you to pick your seats without a disclosure that whatever you select is worthless until you pay additional fee per person per flight.
It's almost like buying your concert tickets at Ticketmaster and then learning you still owe ~25 euro per person to get the seats that you just selected.

Odin it is possible that the problem is related to the class of ticket which would prohibit a fee free selection, and its also possible that its not the real problem, some times it is due to certain coding or other glitches.

The OP can get more information by calling the airline. online information is extremely limited.

It's actually fairly simple:

In economy, any "seat" reservation prior to the actual check-in 23hrs or less before departure only secures your general seating preference: window, aisle, exit row. It does NOT secure you a specific seat in a specific row like 20A or 35K.
In some fare classes this type of preference reservations is for free, in the cheaper ones you pay a fee.

Everybody in eco (regardless if you reserved your seating preference in advance or not) will not get his or her actual seat until 23hrs before departure.

How much is the reservation fee if you want to do it months in advance? And what happens to that fee after it's been paid, and they change the equipment and the seat no longer exists?

Cowboy1968 Aug 10th, 2014 06:39 AM

Again, the advance fee is NOT for a seat.
You pay only for a seating preference (aisle, window, exit row).
Not for a specific row, not for a specific seat.
So even if the equipment gets changed, it will be easy to honor your reserved seating preference as also the new plane will have aisle seats, window seats and exit row seats.
You find the fees via the link I posted on August 2nd.
